The sound of letters appears continuously and without wavering, thus it is like the sound of a bell being struck continuously outside. Meditate on that sound without clinging to its reality. Then, visualize a fire burning like a butter lamp flame in the heart of your self-manifested deity. Within that flame, visualize the chain of sounds previously described as existing. That is because it is peaceful due to the absence of harm such as heat. Because it is purified by the words of whispering and mental recitation, those two are absent. Any mantra, each of its letters possesses complete and unbroken components. In this way, in order to prevent mental wandering, it is said that breath control should be practiced. If breath control is not practiced, one cannot calm the mind, just like livestock. To prevent discouragement or sinking, it is shown by avoiding sleep, which belongs to the side of discouragement. This is not like reciting the mantra in one's own mind, but like listening to someone else reciting the mantra, one's own mind appears to be dwelling in the form of the mantra's sound. As long as external and internal signs such as vomiting and intolerance to heat appear, and one is able to accomplish how one has visualized, then these two meditations should be practiced. The commentary says that the external signs are: absence of harm from hunger and thirst. The internal signs are: through the power of fire visualization and wind yoga, samadhi arises dependent on bliss and warmth. This can be done even when performing the four-limbed recitation, or at the end of the recitation or at other times, in order to increase the power of the mantra and to calm the mind. The commentary says that fire abiding makes the recitations powerful and makes the mind abide, therefore it is said that it can grant accomplishments. Sound abiding is: in the later meditation it says, "The meditation abiding in sound is, the subtle abiding in the heart is, the mandala of the stainless moon, in which there is utter peace, the flame is exceedingly bright, the unchanging base is placed there, sitting comfortably, contemplate the sound? Place the letters on the unchanging, contemplate only the sound." Thus it is said. To contemplate the stainless subtle mandala in the heart is because it is difficult to cut off great conceptual thoughts. On the flame previously abiding in the moon, the unchanging base of the mantra letters, like the body of the deity.

From there, then let go of that and meditate solely on the sound of the mantra. When exhaling, focus on the form of your own deity. Here, when focusing on the sound, do not focus on the deity, the moon, or fire, which is different from the two methods of recitation in the four-limbed recitation and the fire position. The reason for doing so is that other texts say that when meditating on the touch of sound or wind, if one focuses on the form, the mind will be distracted. The mind of enlightenment that realizes that very nature is called immutable because it abides in a single form without appearance. Therefore, the moon, which is its symbol, is also called immutable. Then focus on the arrangement of the letters of the mantra, and then meditate solely on the melody of the sound. Therefore, this is different from focusing on the sound in the four-limbed recitation, because there, one first rests the mind on the form of the deity, and then focuses solely on the sound, whereas here, one first rests the mind on the letters, and then focuses on the sound. The commentary distinguishes this way because it distinguishes from the perspective of the object of focus. The main difference is that previously, one focused on the faults of mental recitation, and then focused on the melody of the sound, whereas here, one does not focus on the sound that one is uttering, but rather on the melody of the mantra. Because these are often said to be meditations that do not depend on recitation. Here also, it is explained from the commentary on wind yoga that stops the life force. The second part has two parts: the order of abandoning the state of sound, and the actual meditation on the end of sound. The first part is: the end of sound is abiding in just the sound of the mantra, and also the end of complete abandonment, the non-dual suchness. If one meditates on it, one will be liberated from the two obscurations and attain the liberation of the nature of the Dharmakaya. That is, it is said in the later meditation: Seemingly dependent becomes a limb, sound and mind, and pure words are the power of the knowledge mantra, abandoning the limbs is known by the Victorious Ones. This explains the order in which the meditation on the end of sound, which gives the liberation of the Dharmakaya, is given through familiarity with what kind of path order. Therefore, it clearly shows the overall order of the path and the boundary of where to meditate on emptiness. The commentary says: Yogis who have entered the practice of secret mantras, for those who have become limbs of secret mantras,
