Feelings are like bubbles on water, perceptions are like mirages, formations are like plantain trees, and consciousness is like illusion. Thus spoke the Kinsman of the Sun. Having spoken thus and while explaining that very meaning, the Root Wisdom also says: The Blessed One, knowing what is and what is not, from the instruction of Katyayana, refuted both existence and non-existence. Thus, it is not the case that the selflessness of phenomena was not taught even in the Hinayana scriptures. However, in the Hearers' scriptures, it is often said that one can progress to the state of an Arhat through the sixteen views of impermanence and so forth. In the Mahayana, both the way of progressing through the realization of the absence of inherent existence of phenomena and the path of impermanence, etc., are taught. For example, in the Mahayana sutras, two ways of progressing to omniscience are taught through the views of Mind-Only and Madhyamaka. The teacher Arya has ascertained through the collections of reasoning that the sutras that teach the way of Madhyamaka cannot be interpreted otherwise. Therefore, just as the sutras that clarify the way of Mind-Only need to be interpreted differently from how they are taught, so too should it be understood here. In the tantric sections, it is also often said that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the suchness of phenomena, and that if one does not realize the suchness of phenomena, one cannot transcend samsara, and that clinging to the notion of truth in phenomena binds one to samsara. Therefore, one needs to know how to explain without contradiction. Now, if it is said that teaching the path of impermanence and so forth does not liberate one from samsara, then why is it taught? The Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning says: The path of arising and ceasing is taught for the sake of necessity. Knowing arising, one knows ceasing. Knowing ceasing, one knows impermanence. Knowing how to engage with impermanence, one will also realize the supreme Dharma. Those who know dependent arising, having completely abandoned arising and ceasing, have crossed the ocean of existence. Thus, it should be known that attachment to conditioned things does not give rise to the desire to transcend samsara. Therefore, as an antidote to that, the path of impermanence and suffering is taught, thereby giving rise to the desire to transcend existence. After that, regarding the reasons for arising and ceasing
