Merely seeking the attainment of pacifying the suffering of samsara, and the particularly excellent undertaking of seeking the supreme attainment of Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings, there are these two types of disciples, inferior and superior. Therefore, the two vehicles that lead these two types to their respective attainments are called the Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle. And the two Dharmas spoken in accordance with these two are called the collections of the Lesser and Great Vehicles. The Lesser Vehicle has two, the Hearer Vehicle and the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the paths that lead them to their respective attainments are divided into the two vehicles of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, thus there are three vehicles. The third part has two: the classification of the Lesser Vehicle, and the classification of the Great Vehicle. The first is: Although the Hearers and Solitary Realizers have superior and inferior in terms of faculties and results, the Ground of the Earth states that the classification of their paths is mostly the same. Detailed differences are feared to be too verbose, so here I will only speak of some rough classifications common to both. Those of these two lineages turn their backs on taking on the burden of others, so they enter into practice merely for their own liberation. The main cause for attaining liberation is the wisdom that realizes selflessness,

Moreover, it is also necessary to place (the clinging to the aggregates) under the purpose of realizing the selflessness of the person. Therefore, as long as there is a true clinging to the aggregates, then a true clinging to the person will also arise. As long as this clinging exists, all the afflictions will not cease. Therefore, no matter how hard the Hearers and Solitary Realizers try, they must admit that they cannot be liberated from samsara. They think so, and quote from the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Your yoga sees selflessness, but cannot realize the nature of form, etc., because it clings to form, so greed, etc., arise, because its nature is not realized." And the commentary on the Bodhisattvacharyavatara also says: "Because it clings to the own nature of form, etc., therefore it is inverted. Therefore, the selflessness of the person cannot be realized, because it clings to the aggregates that are the basis of the imputation of the self." Thus it is said. This is the view of the venerable Nagarjuna. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, there is also karma. From karma there is also birth." And in the Mulamadhyamakakarika it says: "Liberation is obtained by the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions arise from conceptual thought. That arises from elaboration. Elaboration ceases by emptiness." Therefore, being bound to samsara by the true clinging to the aggregates, and to be liberated from samsara, it is necessary to eliminate its root, the elaboration of true clinging. And by realizing the meaning of emptiness of own nature, it can be eliminated. In the Praise of Non-Conceptualization it also says: "The Buddhas, the Solitary Realizers, and the Hearers all rely on it. The path of liberation is only you, it is definitely said that there is no other." Therefore, the Mother of Non-Conceptualization, who realizes that phenomena have no own nature, is the only path of liberation for the three vehicles. As it is said in the Mother of the Conquerors: "Those who wish to study in the Hearer's ground should also study this Prajnaparamita." And it is also said in the same way for the grounds of the Solitary Realizers and the Buddhas. And in the Condensed Verses it says: "Those who wish to become Buddhas and Hearers, and those who wish to become Solitary Realizers and Dharma Kings, cannot obtain it without relying on this patience." This is a summary of the meaning of what was said. In the Vinaya Pitaka of the Hearers it also says: "Form is like a mass of foam."
