Now it is necessary to turn back from clinging. As the King of Reasoning said, "If this object is not destroyed, then it is not possible to abandon it. Abandoning desire and hatred, etc., which are related to qualities and faults, is because they are not seen on the object, but because of the external appearance." Arya Deva also said, "If one sees no self on the object, then the seed of existence will cease." Thus it is said. Then, in the Samputa Tantra, it says, "One should not meditate on emptiness, one should not meditate on non-emptiness. The yogi does not abandon emptiness, nor does he completely abandon non-emptiness. When clinging to emptiness and non-emptiness, not a few discriminations will arise." And in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, it says, "Unbornness and emptiness, and emptiness called self, whoever meditates on the inferior self, that is not meditating." How is it that one does not cling to either emptiness or non-emptiness? There is no fault, because the previous quotation is to prevent the meditation on the nihilistic emptiness that is not established even in the conventional, and the permanence that is not empty in the ultimate, but it does not show that even the emptiness of no self-nature should not be clung to, because in the same quotation before it says, "The realm of phenomena is extremely equal, like a water tree, completely grasped." Because it is said to be grasped as the essence or no self-nature, and in its commentary it also says, "Like a water tree, it is realized as having no essence because of the no self-nature that exists in the ultimate, which is imputed by ignorance, but it is not that it does not exist even in the conventional. Why? Because the nature of the Dharma realm and the self-nature that are equal and the same in no self-nature, such as form, etc., the characteristics of those different things are not real. Those that are not equal are also, because they are different from each other in the conventional. Therefore, it is forbidden to meditate on emptiness and non-emptiness that do not possess the nature of annihilation and permanence." Because it is said so. It is forbidden to meditate on the two, permanence and annihilation, which do not exist in the conventional and exist in the ultimate, then the emptiness of no self-nature in the ultimate, and the non-emptiness that exists in form, etc., in name, are not abandoned. As it says in the Manjushri Root Tantra, "That which has no self-nature in the ultimate is only conventional.

To say that the nature of forms, etc., that exist, that is, abandoning the nature of emptiness and non-emptiness, is unreasonable. As it is said, clinging to emptiness and non-emptiness will generate many conceptual thoughts, which are conceptual thoughts clinging to the extremes of permanence and annihilation, so it is not applicable to all conceptual thoughts. If it is not like this, relying only on the words "do not meditate on emptiness" to argue, it will contradict the many meditations on emptiness mentioned in that and other tantras, and also in the advanced stages of the completion stage, it will contradict what the Protector Nagarjuna and many other masters said, that through the two dhyanas, many conceptual thoughts are developed and withdrawn, so as to enter the clear light. Because according to your view, all conceptual meditations are obstacles to manifesting clear light. The meaning of the second quote is, in the Praise of the Transcendent, it says: "In order to eliminate all conceptual thoughts, you proclaimed the nectar of emptiness, if someone clings to it, you will severely rebuke him." As it is said, it means that it is not allowed to cling to the meaning of emptiness and selflessness as real, but it is definitely not saying that it is not allowed to cling to no self-nature. If it is said that it is not allowed to cling to no self-nature, then it must be denied that all dharmas are without self-nature, and if this is denied, it will become self-nature established, as it is said in the Discussion of the Middle Way: "If no self-nature is reversed, it will become self-nature established." In short, if from the perspective of ultimate truth, clinging to no self-nature is prevented, then because it is not intended to be like this, prevention is meaningless, and also in conventional truth, one cannot determine no self-nature and selflessness through reason, if it is said that one does not cling to these, then one must admit that it is impossible to realize suchness, therefore one must slander all liberation and omniscience. This kind of wrong view is because one has not distinguished what the object to be refuted by the signs of the Middle Way is, and thinks that all ways of clinging are clinging to reality, the refutation of which has been explained in detail elsewhere. Therefore, wise people, even in Vajrayana, should measure the view of the two selflessnesses through hearing and thinking, according to the treatises of the Middle Way, and after obtaining an undistorted view, they should also use the certainty of the meaning of no self-nature.
