Regarding these, the great venerable Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen said: Although one has faith in the Vajrayana, if it is not mature, even if one meditates on the profound, the result will only be evil destinies. The Buddha said that other supreme states cannot be achieved, so one should receive empowerment from the supreme lama. Having received empowerment, one seeks profound instructions. Although one searches everywhere on earth, the essential benefit is the oral instructions and vows. Without these, it is like a dilapidated house with decaying foundations. If one matures well and keeps the vows, even without relying on the profound instructions of the two stages, one can achieve enlightenment in sixteen lifetimes. Thus, he spoke for the benefit of the root of beings. Although I have little learning and lack the eye of wisdom, because I have seen the good words spoken in the stainless tantras, I fold my hands and request everyone to receive empowerment and keep the vows. These words are spoken by one who understands the essential points of the tantras, and I also pray in this way. Understanding such teachings is the work of the lama. If he does not teach them, the lama is at fault, and if he teaches them but the disciple does not practice them, it is the disciple's fault. These have been explained in detail in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru" and the "Explanation of the Root Downfalls," so the chapter on vows should be understood elsewhere. Having understood them, one should strive with all one's might to keep the general and specific teachings, especially the root vows, and among them the most important, the vows of the lama. Having taken the lama, heroes, and yoginis as witnesses, keeping the vows one has promised is indispensable. The third has two parts: first, to understand the path through hearing and thinking; second, to integrate the meaning of what is known into practice through meditation. First, having received empowerment in this way, if one wonders what to do next in order to properly keep the vows and precepts, the "Unraveling the Seven Treasures" says: First, with the wisdom of listening, generate hearing in the continuum of words; then, with the wisdom of thinking, learn the connection between words and meaning. As it says, whether one practices oneself or shows the path to others, one must first seek an unerring understanding through hearing and thinking, because if one does not understand oneself, one cannot guide others, and if one does not understand, one cannot practice. And one practices to the extent that one understands.

If understanding is wrong, practice will be wrong, and correct practice depends on correct understanding. As it says in the "Profound Commentary on Hevajra: A Rosary of Jewels": "Without intelligence, there is no hearing; without hearing, there is no contemplation. There is no yoga free from duality, and without yoga, there is no accomplishment." And in the "Illuminating the Meaning of the Five Stages": "Wisdom is what perfects hearing. If contemplation also possesses these two, then one will diligently engage in meditation, and from that, one will obtain unsurpassed accomplishment. Those who possess intelligence, having thought in this way, should first strive for the meaning of hearing. Whoever is constantly diligent will obtain accomplishment well in their hands. If one has doubts about the words, how will one understand the meaning?" And in the "Five Stages": "Whoever possesses respect and faith in the guru, constantly strives with devotion in service, and retains what is heard is a supreme disciple." Thus, retaining what is heard is stated as a characteristic of a disciple, and in the "Combined Practice" it is said: "Because one does not know the secret suchness, even if one practices, nothing will be accomplished." That is what it says. That is to say, if intelligence and effort are great, one should practice the tantras. If not, one should practice the mantra texts composed by wise and accomplished ones that are suitable for oneself. Even at the very least, one must definitely engage in hearing and thinking about texts that fully show the essential points of the generation stage and completion stage. If one is to become a vajra master who teaches mantra instructions to others, then one must especially be skilled in the two stages and mandala rituals, etc. If one sees the great texts of the tantras and their commentaries as merely robes for cutting off external elaborations, and thinks that there are profound secret instructions hidden within those texts that have not been explained, then one will not respect the ultimate points of the Dharma, and it will hinder the arising of great reverence for the great mantra texts, and those texts appearing as instructions. Therefore, this is a great cause for their rapid destruction, so it should be abandoned like poison. One should rely on the instructions of the holy guru and strive for the method of making the great texts appear as instructions, as it says in the "Five Stages": "In the glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra, these suchnesses are extensively established. Following the spoken tantra, the guru's mouth
