It is not that one must meditate on the path that has its aspect as the cause, but rather that before the marks and signs of a Buddha are accomplished, one needs a cause of the same kind that is in accordance with it, so there is no place for dispute. So, the deity yoga of the lower three tantras, and also of the unsurpassable, the deity body meditation that requires rebirth without accomplishing Buddhahood, will they become the cause in accordance with the form body as you say? These too, because of becoming accustomed to it in this life, will eventually become the cause of the same kind when the form body is accomplished in another life, but they are not the ripening cause of taking birth in the form body. Having properly discerned the necessities spoken of above, one must be certain that meditating on deity yoga is indispensable, as it says in the first chapter of Vajra Dakini: "I am all the Buddhas, And all the heroes themselves. By the union of my own deity, I shall thoroughly accomplish myself. By this, all the Buddhas, And all the heroes themselves, All the Vajra-holders, Will be accomplished in this very life." "The best of bliss, Vajra Dakini, Who unites with all the Dakinis, Thus spoke Vajrasattva Tathagata, The glorious Bhagavan." And it says, "By this union of mudras, All three realms can be consumed without remainder, If one unites elsewhere, Incomplete, like a lamp extinguished." In its commentary it says, "This refers to the mudra of emptiness that was just shown. Whoever has the union with the conventional mudras of hands, faces, etc., is called that. What should the yogi do? That is, 'All three realms can be consumed without remainder,' which means that one should avert the ordinary form of body, etc. In order to show that enlightenment cannot be accomplished by emptiness meditation alone, it says 'If one unites elsewhere,' etc. 'If one unites elsewhere' means only by emptiness. 'Incomplete union' means beyond appearance. 'Extinguished' means entering into nirvana without even the slightest self-benefit. How is it? Like a lamp without oil."

Just as a butter lamp's wick, brightly burning in the expanse of the sky, when the oil runs out, it immediately extinguishes and falls. If one cannot even manifest oneself, how much less can one manifest others? Similarly, one should also practice the samadhi of emptiness alone. As it is said, if there is no practice of deity yoga in the mantra path, then no matter how familiar one is with emptiness and so on, one cannot prevent falling into the extreme of quiescence at the time of fruition. This is the profound intention of the tantras. If one does not gain a good understanding of these, abandoning deity yoga and only practicing parts of the mantra path, one should know that one will not completely obtain the body of the path. The second part has two points: explaining the actual meaning, and explaining the differences of the path. The first point is: Some people think that if there is superiority or inferiority in the paths of the two vehicles, then there must also be superiority or inferiority in the Buddha that is to be attained. Because if there is a difference in the cause, it is contradictory for there to be no difference in the result; if it is not like this, then the difference in the cause becomes meaningless. Therefore, the ground of Eleven-faced All-Illuminating is lower than the state of Vajradhara. Because in the fourth section of the first chapter of the 'Union Tantra' it says: "In brief, it is the Buddha, with countless eons, thus whatever Buddha is attained, with what supreme bliss, you will obtain in this life, or Vajradhara himself." Here it separately speaks of the Buddha and Vajradhara who are attained with countless eons. And again in the same text it says: "In this life one can attain Buddha or Vajrasattva, if one does not attain the inconceivable state, then one is a middling departed, that is, a Buddha. That which symbolizes the name, one should also hold well in the mind." So they say. This is not reasonable, because that scripture says that with the unsurpassed path, either one accomplishes the All-Illuminating spoken of in the Perfection of Wisdom, or one accomplishes the Vajradhara spoken of in the mantra, it is not empty. Moreover, the Buddha to be attained with countless eons and the ground of Eleven-faced All-Illuminating are no different, and this is not accepted by the practitioners of the Perfection of Wisdom vehicle either. Like this, with countless eons
