Therefore, it should be understood without having realized emptiness. In the Root Verses on the Middle Way, it says, "If all these were empty, there would be no arising and no ceasing. Then, for you, the four noble truths would not be established." If everything were empty of inherent existence, then the distinctions of samsara and nirvana could not be established. In response to this challenge, (the text) says: "If all these were not empty, there would be no arising and no ceasing. Then, for you, the four noble truths would not be established." And so forth, (these statements) show that the side of non-emptiness is unreasonable, while the reasoning of emptiness is very reasonable. Also, in the same text, it says, "For whom emptiness is reasonable, for them everything is reasonable. For whom emptiness is not reasonable, for them nothing is reasonable." This is clearly explained through the ways of forward and reverse implication. Therefore, with regard to phenomena, if one thinks that in a place and time that is extremely cold, there is nowhere to grasp anything, and merely having such an understanding is considered to be the attainment of the view of emptiness, then even someone with extremely dull faculties who has not undergone any training could realize it, and there would be no difficulty. However, that alone is not sufficient. In the ultimate truth, all fixations are completely pacified, while in the conventional truth, like an illusion, all the distinctions of samsara and nirvana can be fully accepted. This combination of the two is difficult, and therefore emptiness is difficult to realize. Since both are necessary, if one does not understand the distinction between the two truths, one will not understand the true nature of the teachings; and if one does understand, one will not be confused about the Buddha's intention; and by relying on the ultimate truth and the conventional truth, one will accumulate the two accumulations and ultimately reach the state of perfection. As (the Root Verses on the Middle Way) says, "Those who do not know the distinction between the two truths do not know the profound reality of the Buddha's teachings." And (the Two Truths) says, "Those who know the distinction between the two truths are not confused about the Buddha's teachings; they accumulate all the accumulations and go to the perfection beyond." So it is said. It is said that even in the retinue of the Bhagavan while he was alive, emptiness was difficult to realize. In the Collection of Precious Qualities, it says, "The Dharma of the guides is profound and difficult to see, no one can realize it and it cannot be obtained. Therefore, the benefactor, the compassionate one, having attained enlightenment, thought, 'Who among the assembly of sentient beings will understand?' (The Buddha) therefore felt a little worried."

Moreover, there is an example for the situation where one cannot easily settle the mind in emptiness. The meaning of that sutra is also as stated in the Ratnavali: "For the time being, the body is impure, coarse and an obvious object of experience. When it always appears, the mind does not abide in it. At that time, the sacred Dharma has no place to abide, because it is subtle and not obvious. So how can such a profound Dharma be easily placed in the mind? Because this Dharma is profound, it is difficult for beings to understand, so please remember this. Therefore, the Sakyamuni Buddha turned away from teaching the Dharma." Thus it is said. Therefore, in general, the speaker and the listener, especially the speaker and the listener who can generate this samadhi in the continuum, are very difficult to find, so don't think that it can be done by just finding someone. Therefore, through immaculate hearing and thinking, obtaining a pure view of emptiness is indispensable for generating a pure samadhi of emptiness. Otherwise, if you do not understand the true nature of things, what will you focus on to generate it? Not only that, but you must also seek the true shamatha and vipassana that are practiced in a correct and unerring way, or a samadhi that is in accordance with shamatha and vipassana with the four characteristics as mentioned earlier. When these two are closely combined, and the samadhi of shamatha-vipassana union that focuses on the meaning of non-proliferation is practiced, if the view mentioned earlier is lacking, even if concentration arises, it will not abide in the meaning of non-proliferation, so it can only be shamatha, and there is no meaning of vipassana. Similarly, even if one obtains the correct and unerring understanding of the view, if there is no stable shamatha, the mind will be very shaken by the object of focus, and no matter how much one analyzes with separate thoughts, shamatha and vipassana will not be combined, so both are necessary, which is the meaning stated in most qualified treatises. In order to cut off the wrong path of perversion and generate the correct and unerring view, if the method is briefly described, it seems that the wish cannot be fulfilled. If it is described in detail, it seems that the burden of words will be too heavy, so I will not write it down this time. In general, even if the order of this kind of path is arranged, it does not seem to be helpful, so even if there are all kinds of people urging me to do it, I have not done it before. Alas!
