Therefore, one must strive with great diligence to turn the mind away from seeking the perfections of samsara and generate a strong and lasting aspiration for liberation. Then, recognizing that all sentient beings experience pleasure and pain in the same way that you do, cultivate great familiarity with the three minds of loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. In this way, the thought of being indifferent to the pleasure and pain of sentient beings will be completely reversed, and you will see benefiting others as the most desirable goal. Furthermore, having ascertained that attaining Buddhahood is the supreme method for achieving this goal, generate a very firm resolve to strive for Buddhahood. If you merely have a superficial understanding of these words and mistakenly think that is enough, and then engage in listening, contemplation, and meditation, saying things like, "I am doing this for the sake of the next life, or for liberation, or for the benefit of sentient beings," but in reality, your mind is still inclined towards this life, or towards labeling some pleasurable results of samsara as "liberation," or merely aiming for your own immediate benefit. Therefore, these thoughts must arise genuinely, not just remain at the level of understanding, and must be cultivated through meditation. And the way to meditate is to repeatedly engage in analytical meditation on these topics, examining the various reasons in each case. Although cultivating a clear visualization of these objects is the main cause, it is not enough on its own. During breaks between sessions, you must also read pure scriptures and treatises, along with pith instructions, related to these topics, in order to strengthen your conviction, eliminate obstacles to these thoughts, accumulate favorable conditions, and emphasize the accumulation of merit and purification of obscurations. In this way, by creating causes that possess complete conditions, rather than relying on just one aspect, and by carefully analyzing the advantages and disadvantages with discriminating wisdom and meditating, you can understand, "This is the object, this is the form, and by applying the mind in this way, such a unique realization will arise in the mindstream," thereby deeply understanding the key points of practice.

Even the smallest (faults) can be recognized with confidence. At that time, one will know the unique activities of accomplishing qualities and preventing faults. Whether abandoning or adopting, this is essential. Thinking that this alone is not enough, one must first generate the thought that one will never abandon any sacred Dharma. It is not enough to just generate it; it must be constant and stable, and it must also grow from strength to strength. These are preliminary practices, so there is no need to force habit, nor is it necessary to ensure that they never decline at any time; it is enough to do them once beforehand. Furthermore, thinking that these are yogas like husks and outer skins, and that it is okay to abandon them, and therefore disregarding them and thinking of becoming familiar with the main practice itself, is a complete misunderstanding of the key points of the path. If one lacks the kind of thought mentioned earlier, especially if one lacks the kind of bodhicitta mentioned earlier, then the meditations done in practice will only become similar Dharma. Even if one meditates on emptiness, pure samadhi, it will absolutely not become Mahayana, and this has been said more than once. Therefore, cultivating bodhicitta at the beginning of practice and dedicating the merits at the end of practice with vast aspirations is a great skillful means to turn the virtue cultivated in the main practice into a key and to make it inexhaustible, so it should not be done arbitrarily, but must be combined with cause and effect. In this way, cherish the generation of such thoughts, and based on ensuring that they do not decline, practice the two stages of mantra, then no matter which school you enter, you must base yourself on your own completely pure precepts, especially when entering mantra, the bodhicitta mentioned earlier is the ultimate essence of all Mahayana paths, so it is extremely important to stabilize it. Therefore, it is good if you have received a completely pure empowerment from a qualified spiritual friend, and the vows and precepts you have obtained from the empowerment have not been abandoned by the causes of abandonment, nor have they declined by the causes of decline. Otherwise, receive the empowerment, restore the vows and precepts, and be sure to purify the previous transgressions, the root and branch offenses, etc.
