“Small wisdom” is easy to satisfy when heard, but the minds of great and noble wise ones marvel at being never satiated by wondrous words. Although it is so, I have heard little, my wisdom is shallow, and my actions are inferior. Although I have some words, I am extremely lax in practicing their meaning. Someone like me cannot please your noble heart. However, when blown by the wind, even cottonwood, which has no power of its own, can fly like fine feathers. Similarly, well-propelled by the words of the noble ones, I will make a brief statement. Therefore, we have found a good basis of leisure, encountered the precious teachings of the Victorious Ones, and are held by good spiritual friends. At this time when we have the power of wisdom to discern what to accept and reject, we must definitely take the essence from this good basis. This depends entirely on entering the teachings of the Victorious Ones, but it is not enough to enter with just a good intention. One must know the correct order of entering the teachings, or one must rely on someone who knows how to lead. This requires someone who is skilled in the nature of the path, skilled in the certainty of numbers, and skilled in the order, like this: If one mistakes what is not the path for the path, and mistakes the path for what is not the path, it is like mixing medicine incorrectly. Even if one practices the path of the teachings in this way, it will not actually be meaningful, but will cause harm and will not be of any benefit. Even if one knows the nature of the path well, if one does not know the definite number of what is not needed and cannot be satisfied, then the parts that need to be known will be missing, and the parts that are not needed will be added, so one will not be able to grasp the point. Even if one knows the certainty of the nature and number, if one does not know the order of wisdom and combination of how to lead from the beginning, middle, and end, it is like thinking that it is medicine, and thinking that there is also good medicine in it, so thinking that it can be given to this patient, but because the medicine is too excellent, it not only does not help, but also causes great harm like taking away life. Similarly, thinking that this is the sacred Dharma, and thinking that it is also the most profound in the Dharma, so thinking that there is no fault in leading with this. If it is in accordance with the order, it will only give qualities, but if it is not in accordance with the order, it will not only not give qualities, but will also become the cause of taking away the life of good rebirth and liberation.

Especially, it is important to be skilled in the order. Being skilled in the key points of such practice is also due to the transmission and guidance of a virtuous guru. Therefore, for the great treatises written by qualified authors, one can gain certainty in the complete and perfect stages of the path, rather than just making brief excerpts. Therefore, those concise instructions for guiding without reversing are all extracted from the great treatises. Moreover, because the treatises are vast, their meanings are extremely difficult to understand, and because the order is disrupted and taught due to necessity, it is in order to easily give certainty. Therefore, if one considers the great treatises as teachings to be explained, and the small instructions as practices to be accomplished, and believes that the two are incompatible, then one does not understand the key points of the teachings at all. Like this, the scriptures of the Buddhas and their commentaries, etc., as "Hearing, debating, and practicing diligently," as it says, because all are diligent in practice, entering into practice, and focusing on practice. If so, as it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Without timidity, do not seek many offerings; this is the beneficial advice: subdue your mind, for the Buddha said that the mind is the root of Dharma." And as it says in the Four Hundred Verses: "Apart from the mind, what other actions, such as merit, are there? Because they are not seen, first speak of the mind." As the noble father and son said, the root of all good and bad is only the mind, because the gateway to doing evil and engaging in good is definitely the three doors, and body and speech are under the control of the mind. If it is certain, it is very important to first adjust the thought of motivation without just stopping at words. Although there are many ways to adjust the order, what is universally beneficial for all three types of intelligence, high, medium, and low, is to first remember that this world will not last long, and how the next life will transform, along with the causes, and by familiarizing oneself with it, one can turn away from pursuing the benefits of this life. What should one do to pursue the happiness of the next life? Then think about all the faults of samsara and the benefits of peace.
