Thereby, one should gain a certain conviction. In particular, one needs to cultivate extensively the benefits and drawbacks of keeping and not keeping vows, thereby gaining a certain conviction. If this is not done, it will become keeping vows for the sake of others' faces or for fame and gain, which will not grasp the essential point. The obstacle to accomplishing this as it is, is focusing on the affairs of this life, and this is due to seeing that one will stay long in this life. The antidote to this is nothing other than a deep mindfulness of death, so one must repeatedly cultivate death. In short, the infallibility of karma and its results is a characteristic of omniscience. Therefore, the mindfulness of presence, the "Hundred Karmas," the "Hundred Jatakas," the "Wise and Foolish," the transmission narratives of the Agamas, and other sutras and treatises should be read extensively, thereby firmly establishing conviction in karma and its results. For the negative actions accumulated in the past, one should definitely purify them with the four powers; for the doors of newly entering negative actions, one should definitely restrain them; for the virtuous actions done in the past, one should extensively develop them with great aspirations; for the virtuous actions not yet arisen, one should not be content with a partial understanding, but should generate them from various avenues. Whatever one does, even if it is actual or similar, it is crucial to do it while being embraced by a mind of bodhicitta. The view of emptiness, which the Buddhas have praised many times in the sutras and tantras, destroys all the targets of clinging to characteristics, thus abandoning the extremes of existence and non-existence. If it becomes a friend in deeply gaining conviction in karma and its results, thereby abandoning and adopting from the subtle points of virtue and non-virtue, then it is a view that abandons the extremes of existence and annihilation. However, most sentient beings either cling to the extreme of permanence, with emptiness established as its nature, or cling to the extreme of annihilation, with all conventional designations destroyed, so it is very difficult to realize, and even if realized, very few become vessels for teaching. Therefore, if one has faith in this topic, one should accumulate and purify the causes for realizing it, make many aspirations, rely on a qualified spiritual friend who is skilled in this, become familiar with the related treatises, and not be content with a partial understanding, but should thoroughly analyze and investigate with discriminating wisdom. If so, then alternatingly cultivating and teaching and listening to the meaning of what has just been said will greatly deepen the conviction of understanding.

Please do the same, as it is both the way to benefit beings and the method to counteract afflictions. In short, I have great respect for the teachings of the Sugata, your wisdom and ability are extraordinary, you follow in the footsteps of the great saints, you are the wise Ngawang Drakpa. Please follow my words, in all lifetimes, may our actions and aspirations be the same, and when you attain enlightenment, please first bestow upon me the distribution of nectar. This is a reply from the greatly learned Bhikshu Lobsang Drakpa Pal to Tsakowa Khenchen Ngawang Drakpa, a true virtuous friend, after he established an unprecedented and extraordinary monastic community in Shar Gyalmo Rong (now the area of Jinchuan County, Sichuan Province) and sent a letter. Sent from De'ur, a secluded place in E, may all be auspicious! Homage to the venerable Lamas! I will explain to the best of my ability the essence of all the Buddha's teachings, the path praised by the noble Bodhisattvas, and the entrance for those fortunate ones who desire liberation. Those fortunate ones who are not attached to the happiness of samsara, who strive to make this precious human life meaningful, and who trust in the path that pleases the Buddhas, please listen with joyful hearts. Without pure renunciation, there is no way to seek the fruit of happiness and peace in the ocean of samsara. Because of attachment to samsara, beings are bound, so first seek renunciation. By becoming accustomed to thinking about the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment and the impermanence of life, you can reverse your attachment to this life. By repeatedly thinking about the infallibility of karma and the sufferings of samsara, you can reverse your attachment to future lives. If you cultivate in this way, you will not generate even a moment's longing for the perfections of samsara, and if you generate a mind that seeks liberation day and night, then you have generated renunciation. If this renunciation is not accompanied by pure Bodhicitta, it will not become the cause of the perfect bliss of unsurpassed enlightenment, therefore wise people should generate the supreme Bodhicitta. Carried away by the torrent of four powerful rivers, Bound tightly by the inescapable ropes of karma, trapped in the cage of the iron net of self-grasping, shrouded in the thick shadows of the darkness of ignorance, born and reborn in limitless samsara, afflicted by the three sufferings...
