Contemplate deeply on this principle of dependent arising, If you have not grasped the root of benefit and happiness, All those faults of indulging in self-proclaimed scholarship and long meditation, Are all in vain. Like mistaking pebbles for jewels, carrying burdens in vain, Like a merchant who went to the Golden Land and returned empty-handed, You should know that you are returning to your homeland in this way. If you have obtained the rare Dharma, you should not waste time, If you see great meaning, you should cherish the time and not waste it, If you think of death, you should prepare for the next life, If you think of karma, you should turn away from carelessness. If the roots of these four are firm, The remaining virtues will easily arise. Therefore, do not be happy with a dilapidated house with decaying foundations, Learn the four roots. First, relying on the power of the field, The power of inner thought will arise. To the virtuous friend and the offering of the Three Jewels, May there be continuous and uninterrupted practice. Thus, if you focus on strengthening the foundation, Then all the profound and vast Dharmas, Some can be taken into practice now, Others can be made the object of aspiration, None are abandoned, all are means to Buddhahood. Thus, if you know how to integrate all the Buddha's teachings, Into the path, it is the pinnacle of wisdom. Otherwise, it is merely abandoning the Dharma. In short, do not follow your own desires, But follow the Buddha's commandments. In that case, even if there is temporary suffering, you should respect its benefits, Like treasures and burnt offerings. I have given a little advice with love, May all beings, through this virtue, Be embraced by the supreme virtuous friend, And practice according to his teachings. This "Letter: Grasping the Root of Benefit and Happiness" was written by the Shakya monk Lobsang Drakpa Pal (Tsongkhapa) at Namgyal Lhading Monastery in response to a letter from the official Namkha Palsang and sent to Lhatö Jang.

It's just opening your mouth in vain. Small pleasures are the source of many sufferings, Insatiable indulgence is the gateway to great misdeeds, Destroying the great meaning of this and future lives, What is there to crave in this source of decline? A wise person would rather be with a venomous snake, Than to trust such an incarnation of desire. What is proclaimed by those of little wisdom, That so-called "glory," in most cases, Is merely a mismatch between name and reality. Therefore, those with wisdom should be cautious. Those with faltering steps and unsteady gait, Will be led astray by evil companions. Therefore, relying on the holy ones with wisdom and power, Is the essential point of the teachings. Here, it is rare to find those who understand and advise properly, It is even rarer to follow the advice. Therefore, even the holy ones with compassion, Do not repeatedly give advice. For those who can learn from beneficial advice, Extracting the essence of the three realms' lamas' intentions, Words of good counsel that satisfy the mind and ears, Repeatedly teaching is not difficult to obtain. This (above text) was also given by the venerable one himself to Magcig (Ma gcig) the official. May the official be well and have a safe journey. The instructions and teachings of Khenpo Yeshe De (mKhan po ye shes sde) (Wisdom Army), who is the eye of the world, you diligently practiced and brought them to me, reaching my hands, which makes me feel immense joy. Here, because I have relaxed the vows for a long time, I will temporarily strictly guard the vows and stabilize the yidam. I will definitely come again, but I do not remember death, and I am not firm in the principles of karma and its results. My body is busy, and my mind is weak, which will leave many opportunities for sins and downfalls. Even if I cannot recall the situation at that time, as long as a little bit of proper mindfulness arises in my mind, I will remember the teachings of that teacher who speaks the truth without duality and does not speak other words. Thinking about what my future will become, I will feel intense regret, so I choose to lie in bed and practice. You should also be like this, do not forget what you think in your heart: I will die before I purify my sins. How can I obtain final liberation from here? Please save me as quickly as possible! Please be sure not to forget what you said, and
