I am delighted that the Geshe Dharma friends are well. Here, too, I am comfortable and doing whatever good deeds I can. The main thing at the moment is still, as before, to stay in harmony with the meaning of taming one's own mind, and to arrange for various auspicious circumstances for the Buddhas to maintain the sacred Dharma for a long time, under the name of "doing the work of the teachings," by first speaking sweetly to beings gathered by generosity, and then arranging to do things that benefit them. You asked about the preliminary practices of the six perfections of the mind of enlightenment: Giving away body and possessions to anything without hesitation is generosity; not harming is discipline; not being afraid of that is patience; not being discouraged or retreating is diligence; being single-pointed without distraction is meditation; if one can decide that these five are free from the defilement of the three spheres and are empty in nature, then does one have the common six perfections? And, even if one does not know the benefits and faults of giving in detail, if one only knows how to protect the nature of one's mind, the mind will not fall into the wrong path. Please explain the true meaning of this. The answer to the previous question is: "Not being afraid of that" means not being afraid of the profound Dharma. If one has these six Dharmas, including that, then one can consider that one has the common six perfections of the two great vehicles. However, what you are saying is only a part of the common Paramitas, because all the common trainings of the six perfections are not included in it, and just learning these is not considered learning all the common trainings of the six perfections. As for the latter question, even if one does not know the benefits of giving etc. in detail, if one can protect the nature of the six perfections as asked before, then is protecting it the right path? The answer is that just knowing these and training the mind of giving, stopping harming other beings etc. is indeed the right path. But if one only learns these and does not learn other trainings, but thinks that there is no fault, then is that right? For this question, one needs to examine the learner. If one has not taken the Bodhisattva vows and is only practicing the aspiration for enlightenment, then one can learn fewer things, and one can arrange the time each day according to one's ability. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings, therefore, one should do it according to one's ability.

As it is said, "Even if it is just a root of virtue, it should be properly taken and protected." And "For as long as one has the ability, one should properly take and abide in virtue." If the basis is someone who has taken the bodhisattva vows through ritual, it is a great mistake to think that it is enough to learn only what has been said before. Because, for a beginner who has taken the bodhisattva vows, some things, like the small ground, can be done by oneself but not by others, and should not be accustomed to. Also, like the prohibition for beginners to give up their body and life, except for the two prohibitions specifically mentioned in the sutras, one should learn the bodhisattva's trainings. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "Whatever is related to the bodhisattva, those things that are generally taught that should not be accustomed to or prohibited, a beginner bodhisattva should not learn. If there are not those two, then one should learn everything." Moreover, for the trainings extensively taught in the sutras, because they are difficult to understand due to weak intelligence, someone asked what should be done, and the answer was: "The key points that do not lead to downfall, one should understand through these." The key points are: "One's own body and possessions, and the virtues born in the three times, are all given to all sentient beings, and one should protect them, purify them, and increase them." Therefore, one should grasp the boundaries of protection of the four sets of three, twelve items of giving, protecting, purifying, and increasing through the Compendium of Trainings and the like, so as to avoid downfall. However, it is also said that in the bodhisattva's trainings, if one protects one, but cannot protect others, there is no fault. But that does not apply to the root downfalls. Therefore, what we say about needing to understand well refers to this kind of situation. These have been explained in detail in the commentary on the chapter on ethics and in the Stages of the Path, so I will not elaborate here. Furthermore, for someone who has fully received the four empowerments, "The main thing to protect is the fourteen root downfalls. If any one of them occurs, one will fall into the Vajra Hell and so on." Although this is clearly explained in the tantras and subsequent treatises and the instructions of the gurus, for men and women who have not even generated refuge, and do not even abandon a little bit of non-virtue,
