Please observe carefully, since it is said that this is controversial with the Heshang, then can it be admitted that those scholars are wrong? Furthermore, are there two types of meditation: analytical meditation and calming meditation? If not, does this negate the statements of the Indian wise men? If so, what is the reason for dividing meditation into these two types? Also, is analytical meditation meditation or not? If not, then is it wrong that Indian scholars have said it is meditation? If it is meditation, then distraction is an obstacle to meditation, so why is it said that one cannot be distracted? What is the reason for saying that there is no difference between good and bad meditation when a scholar who has previously heard the Dharma and a fool who has not heard the Dharma meditate? Furthermore, if distraction is an obstacle to meditation, then in Asanga's Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said that meditation that does not rely on hearing and thinking will not be correct, and many scholars have said that hearing and thinking are aids to meditation, are these all inverted statements? Some say that distraction is an obstacle to meditation, if this refers to the time of ultimate meditation on the true meaning, and not to all situations, then when practicing the true meaning, is it necessary to examine with discriminating wisdom? If it is necessary, then it contradicts the statement that distraction is an obstacle to meditation. If it is not necessary, then such a true meaning contradicts Nagarjuna's system of Vipassana, so it should be abandoned as the ultimate meditation. Some people think that distraction and meditation are not contradictory, and that there is a trick to turn distraction into meditation, then they can be asked this: are agitation and distraction the same or different? Are Shamatha and meditation the same or different? If they are the same, then the enemy of Shamatha is sinking and agitation, so distraction becomes an obstacle to meditation. If they are not the same, then what is the difference? Also, when doing calming meditation, does this mind rest on one object, or does it not rest? If it does not rest, then what kind of calming meditation is this that has no resting? If it is said that it is not necessary to rest on the object, but to keep the mind from being distracted, like Zen, so it is called calming meditation, then how can such a dull mind, without any object in mind, be said to be correct calming meditation? This is transmitted from ear to ear, so Sutra

There is no need to make vows or listen to teachings. If you think that simply guarding this will ultimately lead to accomplishment, then it would be good if, without putting anything in your mind, you could sit blankly and simultaneously know the three times and attain omniscience. However, I see no difference between that kind of meditation and the meditation style of the Heshang. However, there is a great difference between the Heshang's way and ours. The Heshang sees all virtuous deeds, such as generosity, as faults, while we see all virtuous deeds as virtues. If you think that there is no difference in view and meditation, then saying that there is a difference in conduct is like answering the question of whether the face is white or black by talking about the size of the anus. However, if you think that my meditation is not about not putting anything in mind, but about keeping the Great Seal in mind, then please observe whether the Great Seal you desire is in accordance with Nagarjuna's view and meditation. If it is not in accordance, then what is the difference between saying a dog is a lion? If it is in accordance, then Nagarjuna's view and meditation must be free from falling into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Please explain well what kind of mind leads to the extreme of permanence and what kind of mind leads to the meditation of annihilation. If you do not understand this distinction, but think that you can do it, then without understanding whether you have fallen into error or not, your current meditation has not yet attained stability based on correct reasons without error. Although you claim to have attained a profound understanding and decisive meditation, you have not actually reached it, but have only remained at the level of faith and understanding. Please be aware of this. If you look at existence, you will fall into the extreme of permanence. If you look at non-existence, you will fall into the extreme of annihilation. If you look at both of these, or at anything other than these, you will ultimately fall into extremes. If you think that the view that is free from these four extremes is Nagarjuna's view and meditation, then what is this view that is free from the four extremes like? Even if you say it is a view, you have not looked at anything. Have you not realized this? Have you not yet fallen into the blank state of not putting anything in mind, which was previously mentioned as turning to the side of the Heshang? Then, not putting anything in mind and not meditating on anything is the best meditation. To anything
