I do not know from whence those Tathagatas came, nor whither they went. Because I have not seen them, my heart is very sad and unhappy. That heart is like the peak of the western mountain, abandoned by the sun of the Victorious One. The moonlight of diminished joy, and the darkness of sorrow, shake together. However, regarding those places of doubt, the treasure of limitless qualities, I will later ask the lord of speech, Holy Dharma. Then, the Bodhisattva, the great being, thought thus: I am so very poor that I do not have precious clothes, or gold, silver, pearls, coral, turquoise, lapis lazuli, or the like, nor do I have incense, flowers, garlands, unguents, incense, or the like, to offer as means of veneration to the Bodhisattva Holy Dharma. If I were to go to the Bodhisattva Holy Dharma in this way, then I would have done something inappropriate. Thinking thus, he kept respect for the guru near, and then went to a border city. In the middle of that city, such a thought arose in him: The root of self-grasping is extremely firm, like a golden foundation. From the ocean of ignorance, it arose from the rapid churning of karma. The mountain of suffering, the ladder of birth and death, is bound tightly by desire. Seeing that I have long wandered meaninglessly in the ocean of existence, I sell my body without regret, and with that value I will venerate the virtuous friend. Desiring this, I entered the city. This body, from top to bottom, the door of the treasury is open, snot, phlegm, feces, urine, and so on, constantly flowing, showing that in this impure, rotten storehouse, there might be something pleasing. In order to abandon this oath, I observe in this way. Having recognized this state of the body, who with a mind would crave it? Thus, that great being sat in the center of the city to sell his body, repeatedly proclaiming: Who wants my body? That one who had entered the great conduct of the Bodhisattva was recognized by the evil demon, and he thought thus: When this one has perfected the vigor of conduct, the skillful guide.

O supremely excellent one! When this being is led to the entrance of the ocean of the three bodies, having been well ferried over by the excellent boat of selflessness, and led to the island of liberation jewels, the realm of activity of myself, retinue, bhutas, and so forth, is far surpassed, and there is nothing to do. Therefore, from now on, I will create obstacles. A small lamp is easily extinguished quickly, but the fire of a great forest is not like that. Having thought in this way, I will block the words of the great being from the path of being heard by others. Then, when the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita could not find a buyer, his own desired purpose was not accomplished. He thought, "Alas! I am truly a person of little merit!" Thinking this, he sat weeping. It is not the path of the gods, and even though it is far from the garment of clouds, on your face, tears like rain, constantly fall, as if this were done to destroy the constant flow of rain in the world. At that time, having seen him sitting in that way, the lord of the gods, Indra, in order to examine the superior intention of the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita, transformed into the form of a Brahmin boy, sat in front of him, and said this: "Son of good family, why are you depressed in your heart and tears flowing from your eyes?" The Bodhisattva said, "I wish to sell my body in order to obtain the Perfection of Wisdom and to make offerings to the great Bodhisattva Dharmodgata, but no one buys my body, and I am sad for that reason." Then, the Brahmin boy said this to the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita: "From my knowledge, materials arise for offering sacrifices and performing fire oblations. I am looking for human flesh, heart, and blood, legs and bones. If you can give these, I will give you the price as you wish." At that time, the courage of that excellent person increased like a great ocean, and like being filled with beautiful flowing water, his mind became completely joyful. Then, that great Bodhisattva, without hesitation, cut off the flesh from the right thigh of his own body, pierced his body with a sharp weapon, blood flowed, and bones broke, and he went to the wall. At that time, a merchant's daughter, who had accumulated roots of virtue in the past before many Buddhas, was beautiful in form.

I saw her, beautiful in appearance, her youth in full bloom, her eyes like blue lotuses, her hair dark blue, her breasts full and abundant. She was like a goddess in a pleasure garden. On the rooftop of her father's house, she was surrounded by hundreds of female attendants, making music for her father. By the power of merit accumulated in other lives, her body had become exceedingly beautiful, like an immortal goddess appearing in person, becoming nectar for the eyes of beings with attachment. Her face adorned the ocean, her pair of eyes rivaling the blue lotus. The circle of her breasts was charming with the weight of her nipples. Her lower body was full, and her limbs above the waist were beautiful. Gentle, with a subdued mind, her senses were calmed. She was surrounded by a crowd of young women, joyfully playing with the sound of the lute, which was as melodious as the song of the Gandharvas. Urged by the power of previous virtuous roots, she looked out from a window of the house and saw the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita engaged in giving his own flesh and blood to the Brahmin boy. She quickly descended and came to him. When she arrived, she saw that he had no attachment to his own body, just as one would treat a corpse in a charnel ground. I, too, have no attachment to my body. Seeing that the Brahmin desired flesh and blood, the Bodhisattva was giving it to him. That virtuous woman's body and mind trembled greatly, like the moon's reflection in a moving ocean. Then, that girl, seeing the Bodhisattva practicing such difficult conduct, her body trembled like a tree shaken by a violent wind, and with eyes full of tears, she spoke these words: Who is it that will give away today this body, adorned with the flowers of fresh youth, as vast and beautiful as the branches of a heavenly tree, for the sake of this heartless Brahmin? When she spoke these words, the great Bodhisattva, his face like a fully blossomed lotus, with a row of bright, clear teeth, said to the virtuous woman: Sister, I am very poor. In order to seek virtuous friends and teachings, and offerings, I am giving this body to him. When he had spoken these words, the girl said: By serving him in this way, what kind of qualities will you obtain? The four-faced Brahma or eyes?
