In particular, the great scholar Kamalaśīla has spoken of the three stages of meditation, so please observe them well, because they are said to be controversial with the Heshang (referring to the Heshang Mahāyāna). Then, can it be admitted that those scholars are wrong? Also, for meditation, do analytical meditation and stabilizing meditation arise or not? If they do not arise, then is this denying what the authoritative Indian masters have said? If they do arise, then what is the reason for dividing meditation into these two? Furthermore, is analytical meditation meditation or not? If it is not, then is it wrong that the Indian scholars have said it is meditation? If it is meditation, then since distraction is an obstacle to meditation, what is the reason for saying that one should not be distracted? What is also the reason for saying that there is no difference between good and bad meditation when a learned person who has previously heard and a foolish person who has not heard meditate? Furthermore, if distraction is an obstacle to meditation, then in Asaṅga's *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it is said that meditation that does not rely on hearing and thinking will not be correct. And also, many other scholars have said that hearing and thinking are aids to meditation. Are those teachings reversed? And some say that distraction is an obstacle to meditation. If that is the time for the ultimate definitive meaning meditation, and not in all cases, then, when meditating on the definitive meaning, is it necessary to examine with the wisdom of individual analysis? If it is necessary, then it contradicts saying that distraction is an obstacle to meditation. If it is not necessary, then such a definitive meaning contradicts Nāgārjuna's view of insight, so abandon that as the ultimate meditation. And some think that distraction and meditation are not contradictory, and that there is a trick to turn distraction into meditation, then ask him this: Are agitation and distraction the same or not the same? Are *śamatha* and meditation the same or not the same? If they are the same, then the enemy of *śamatha* is lethargy and agitation, so distraction becomes an obstacle to meditation. If they are not the same, then what is the difference? Also, when doing stabilizing meditation, does this mind rest on one object or not? If it does not rest, then what kind of stabilizing meditation is this that has no rest? Or, it is not necessary to rest on this object, but the mind itself does not allow it to be distracted anywhere, resting like in Chan, so it is called stabilizing meditation. If that is the case, then such a dull mind that has no object to hold in the mind,

How to correctly explain meditation? Since this is transmitted orally, it does not rely on scriptures as evidence. It also does not require listening. If one thinks that ultimate accomplishment can be achieved simply by practicing oneself, and that by sitting blankly without thinking of anything, one will simultaneously know the three times and attain omniscience, then that would be good. However, I see no difference between that kind of meditation and the meditation method of the Heshang. If one thinks that there is a great difference between the Heshang's method and ours, because the Heshang considers all virtuous deeds such as generosity to be faults, while we consider all virtuous deeds to be merits, then that is like answering the question of whether the face is white or black by saying whether the anus is big or small, when asked in response to saying that there is no difference in view and meditation, that there is a difference in conduct. However, if one thinks that our meditation is not not thinking of anything, but thinking of Mahamudra, then please observe whether the Mahamudra you desire is in accordance with Nagarjuna's view and meditation. If it is not in accordance, what is the difference between that and saying that a dog is a lion? If it is in accordance, then Nagarjuna's view and meditation must not fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Please explain well, what kind of mind will lead to the view of permanence, and what kind of mind will lead to the meditation of the view of annihilation. If you do not know how to distinguish these, but think that you can do it yourself, then without knowing whether you have fallen into error or not, your current meditation has not been free from error, nor has it attained stability based on correct reasons. Even if you claim to have attained deep conviction and decisive meditation, it has only reached the level of faith and understanding, please consider this carefully. However, if you look at existence, you will fall into the view of permanence; if you look at non-existence, you will fall into the view of annihilation; if you look at both of these, or if you look at something other than these two, you will ultimately fall into extremes. If you think that the view that is free from these four extremes is Nagarjuna's view and meditation, then what is the nature of the view that is free from these four extremes? Even if you say that it is a view, you have actually gone without looking at anything, have you not realized that? You have not yet reached the state of blankness and not thinking of anything, which was previously mentioned and classified as belonging to the Heshang.
