By the virtue of this, may all beings be inseparable from the pure and excellent path. I, the yogi, also make this aspiration. May you, who desire liberation, also make the same aspiration. This is a concise summary of the stages of the path to enlightenment, written as a reminder. By the greatly learned monk, the renunciate, Lobsang Drakpa's glorious one, at Drok Riwoché (Drepung Monastery), Geden Nampar Gyalwai Ling (Ganden Monastery). Om, may it be auspicious! Called "The Combination of Words of the Supreme Three Jewels," I respectfully take refuge in the lotus feet of the venerable lama, Manjushri. With steadfast faith, following in the footsteps of the Victorious Ones, with manifest effort and undiminished wisdom, desiring to extract the essence from the words of the Buddha, desiring to proclaim the precious combination of words. Even a small portion of the rays of his compassion, entering the mind, effortlessly bestows the supreme gift of words, Manjushri, I prostrate to you, may my hopes bear fruit. The splendor of existence is fleeting, like the dance of lightning, youth does not stay, like water rushing down a steep mountain. Having realized this, great wise ones ponder: What knowledge should I study? The wisdom to dissect subtle reasoning, the practice that reveals scriptures as instructions, and the eloquence of speech skilled in the art of combining words, these three appear in this world like precious jewels. These are extremely rare and fulfill desires, increasing extraordinary joy, hence they are known as jewels by the wise. There is no other jewel that captivates the minds of the wise. The chief of speakers, the noble father and sons, and Dignaga and Dharmakirti, who vanquish false doctrines, unless the water of the nectar of reasoning, which comes excellently from them, repeatedly washes away the stains on the eye of wisdom, what need is there to mention seeing the very deep places, even the slightly shallower places are difficult to see. When repeatedly contemplating the meaning of the scriptures of reasoning, mostly mistaken thoughts will increase, and even if certainty is gained by merely a correct assertion, because the power of valid cognition of proof and refutation cannot resolve doubt, it becomes like a stake driven into mud, unable to firmly establish correct habits. Here, even if one is well-versed in two types of reasoning, wanting to go east, one goes west, like a blind person

Like sunlight burning pretas, due to the power of wrong views based solely on sectarian positions, the eye of wisdom is repeatedly obscured, destroying all goodness in this and future lives for a long time. It is a cause for turning away from the correct view and heading in the wrong direction, and there appear to be many extremely firm roots. Therefore, until your intelligence is sharp and wise, and not like the tip of a kusha grass, do not be easily satisfied, but rely on wise spiritual friends and diligently study the sectarian treatises. In this way, with the eye of wisdom, you will be able to understand the profound meaning of the supreme vehicle spoken by the Buddhas, the intent of the two doctrines of the Mind-Only school and the Absence of Inherent Existence school. After that, by studying the traditions of masters such as Mipham Rinpoche, Nagarjuna, and the Asanga brothers, as well as many stainless treatises, with vast words, you will be able to skillfully guide those with initial karma from the present moment until the state of Buddhahood, through profound instructions. By becoming familiar with all the scriptures and commentaries, you will be called a wise person when they arise as the best of instructions. The rest is like a parrot's recitation, like a well without water, or a butter lamp in a painting. Why is this so? Because the wise ones composed the treatises so that we would know how to practice them. Alas! The accomplishment of the two benefits for beings does not depend on pure treatises. Even if one relies on them, merely clinging to the words and abandoning the meaning, one is deceived by them. Like some people who are carried away by water die of thirst, although they have heard much, they lack Dharma because the treatises have not arisen as instructions. Therefore, it is crucial to transform what you have learned into instructions. In this way, if you do not miss the key points of the meaning, even if the wording is slightly inferior, the fault is small. However, when the Buddha praised the scriptures, he said, "The meaning is excellent, and the words are excellent." Just as a pure white mansion is painted with light that emits cool rays, if an excellent meaning is adorned with captivating words, it will become even more beautiful. The metrical structures called "Vrtta" and "Jati," which are adorned with red and yellow and by the Buddhas, although they do not exist in Tibetan, the style of alternating between verse and prose, with embellishments such as ornaments of meaning and words, is poetry.
