Clear and with a firm foundation of faith, generous in giving and engaged in listening, the words of the letter sent long ago by Namkha Pal, with good and pleasing content. The lineage embodying the form of the supreme prince, the saffron banners, and other pleasing gifts sent by the messenger, arrived at my place without any omissions. Having previously learned beneficial teachings, now they say, "Please bestow a feast of good words again." Although there is no teaching more excellent than the teachings previously given, if you listen respectfully and are repeatedly well-advised, you will surely gain special benefits, just as a very fine drop of water falling can penetrate the hardest rock. Alas! These beings have little wisdom and no holy protector to advise them properly, so with great effort they constantly enter the gate of decline. Therefore, since having long gone beyond the conduct of children and having attained the conduct of the holy ones, one should not be satisfied with that, like sheep and donkeys on a mountain peak adorned with lotuses. Our accumulation of well-performed deeds is small, but we constantly turn towards the gate of misdeeds. Therefore, only now have we found the opportunity to meet the teachings of the Buddha, which are the door to happiness and well-being. If we do not abandon meaningless actions like winnowing chaff in this present time, who can endure the suffering of passing through many eons in the lower realms after body and life are lost? Like those possessed by demons who attack the lives of loving friends, the deluded regard the boundaries of the Buddha's precepts as enemies to their own happiness and well-being. If you follow the teachings I have spoken, then contemplate for a long time that leisure and endowment are very difficult to find and have great meaning, and that they quickly perish like water bubbles, and after that, who else will you follow? The results of black and white karma, even the slightest, are not deceiving. Those who have not grasped the root of benefit and happiness, but boast of being wise and are satisfied with the excuse of long meditation, are all like those who mistake rubble for jewels and carry the burden of heavy plums. Know that they are like merchants who went to the Golden Land and returned, heading towards their own homeland! If you know that leisure and endowment are difficult to find, then think about how to abide in them.
