It is for this reason that, for example, a brave person, seeing his own blood from a wound, becomes even more courageous and steadfast; a coward, seeing the blood of another's wound, faints and falls to the ground. There are two ways to transform suffering into the path: from one's own perspective and from the perspective of others. The first is: Having generated the strength of mind in this way, this kind of suffering that arises is something to be rejoiced at because it leads to the accumulation of merit for those who possess the power of discriminating wisdom, that is, to generate the thought of definitely escaping from samsara, to have firm faith in the refuge, to eliminate arrogance, to be wary of evil, to rejoice in virtue, and to elicit compassion for sentient beings. The first of these is: As long as one wanders in samsara under the control of karma and afflictions, one will continue to be harmed by suffering like this, so I must attain the peace that extinguishes the continuum of the aggregates of appropriation. Once wandering in samsara, being tormented by many sufferings is not something that should not have happened, but is the nature of samsara, so think like that. The second is: The fear of samsara is not just once or twice, but wandering endlessly, the protector from the suffering of such fear is only the infallible Three Jewels, therefore, no matter what happens in all lifetimes, one must not abandon the Three Jewels, so firmly take refuge in the Three Jewels and strive. The third is: The pride directed at oneself, and the contempt for others that it entails, is the basis for destroying many virtues and committing many misdeeds, and is the gateway to many harms, the suffering I experience can prevent arrogance and can see the place of renunciation, so eliminate arrogance, think like that. The fourth is: Such suffering causes great sorrow, so those who do not want this suffering should abandon the cause of this suffering—non-virtue, thinking in this way, repent of past misdeeds with the four powers, and strive to prevent future misdeeds. The fifth is: The happiness of being free from such suffering is truly beneficial, so if you like the happiness of being free from suffering, then you should

One should recognize the need to strive and accumulate merit through various means. Sixth, just as I am, view sentient beings as also being tormented by suffering as great as or greater than this, and generate compassion, wishing that they too may be free from all suffering. Second, for all sentient beings in general, and especially for humans or non-humans who are the external causes of one's own suffering, cultivate loving-kindness extensively, wishing that my suffering may replace all the harm they experience, that their harm may cease, that all my happiness may be given to them, and that I may take upon myself their sins and suffering, even striving to purify the mind with artificial giving and taking, and through the door of Kusali's accumulation of merit, emanate countless bodies, giving them whatever they desire without hesitation, doing this many times each day, and at the end, sealing it with the view of the emptiness of the three spheres, making great aspirations from the depths of your heart for the sake of all sentient beings and those who harm you, this is worthy of praise, make this the main practice of virtue, and if you can expand other recitations in the intervals of meditation, it would be even better, please consider it deeply. If you do so, the suffering that would otherwise become an obstacle to the virtue of others will become a helper. Transforming adverse conditions into the path, turning bad omens into auspiciousness, one can transform demons into spiritual friends, so whatever arises on the path, transform it into the path. When obstacles arise, pray to the guru and yidam as inseparable, and give torma to the obstructing spirits, saying with confidence: Give me more of that or even worse. In this way, they will not disturb your mindstream, but will be regarded as virtuous friends. It is said that if you practice from small sufferings, you will become proficient in dealing with great sufferings, please consider it in this way. This was written by the glorious Losang Drakpa, urged from afar by Nyeltonpa Rinchen Samdrub, who possesses both scriptural authority and reasoning. By relying on whom, the immediate and ultimate benefit, The single gift of ease, the friend of all. The dust of the feet of that protector, the treasure of compassion, May I reverently worship in life after life.
