Now, the concise summary of the non-inverted key instructions is: all are extracted from the great treatises. The meaning of the key instructions is also because the treatises are extensive, and their meanings are extremely difficult to understand, and because the order is confused and taught due to necessity, in order to easily give certainty. If the great treatises are taken as the Dharma to be explained, and the small key instructions are taken as the Dharma to be practiced, and it is held that these two are contradictory, then it is because the essence of the teachings has not been understood at all. Like this, all the Buddha's scriptures, including commentaries, are, as it says, "Hearing, contemplating, and practicing should be diligently undertaken," all are diligently practicing, entering into practice, and focusing on practice. If that is the case, then as it says in the Letter to a Friend: "What is the use of seeking much learning without humility? This is the essential point of beneficial advice: subdue your mind, as the Bhagavan said, the mind is the root of all Dharma." And as it says in the Four Hundred Verses: "Apart from the mind, for going to places and so on, because merit and so on are not seen, therefore for all external things, the mind should be mentioned first." Just as the noble father and son said, the root of all good and bad is the mind, because the gateways to engaging in evil and engaging in good are definitely three, and the body and speech are controlled by the other power of the mind. If this is certain, then it is extremely important to first adjust the thought of the motivation before it becomes merely words. Although many have been taught about the order of adjustment, what is commonly beneficial to all abilities, high, medium, and low, is: first, to remember death, that one will not remain long in this world, and how one will transform in the next life, together with the causes, and to cultivate this extensively, thereby turning the mind away from pursuing this life. Then, how should one generate the mind that seeks happiness in the next life and beyond? After that, by diligently contemplating the faults of all of samsara and the benefits of peace, thereby turning the mind away from pursuing the perfections of samsara, one must generate a strong and lasting mind that seeks liberation. After that, seeing that all sentient beings are the same as oneself in how happiness and suffering benefit and harm them. For love, compassion, and bodhicitta

If one becomes extremely familiar, one will not be indifferent to accomplishing and eliminating the happiness and suffering of sentient beings, but will completely reverse the thought of only caring for one's own benefit. One will see the benefit of others as an obvious desire, and one will be certain that the best method for accomplishing this is only through Buddhahood. Therefore, how can one generate the extremely firm thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood? If one mistakes merely understanding the structure of these words as sufficient, and then engages in listening, contemplation, and meditation, even if one utters many pleasant words such as "I do these for the sake of the next life," or "for the sake of liberation," or "for the benefit of sentient beings," the direction of one's thinking will still not be separate from this life, or one will label some of the pleasant results of samsara with the name of liberation, or one will only think of one's own immediate benefit, and have no other thoughts. Therefore, the arising of these thoughts cannot merely remain at the level of understanding, but must be cultivated. And the way to cultivate them should be that, for these kinds of thoughts, one should analyze them from various angles according to their respective situations, and only by repeatedly cultivating this analytical meditation can one truly accomplish them. Among these, cultivating focus and understanding of these thoughts is the main cause, but these alone are not enough. During the breaks between meditation sessions, one must also read the pure scriptures and treatises based on these thoughts, as well as the oral instructions, in order to strengthen one's conviction, eliminate the obstacles to these thoughts, and emphasize accumulation and purification to facilitate favorable conditions. In this way, in terms of causes, one must not harbor any wishful thinking, but possess all the necessary conditions. Then, one should carefully analyze the advantages and disadvantages with discriminating wisdom and meditate on them, so that one can understand, "This goal is like this, the form is like this, the way of thinking is like this, therefore, such a unique imprint will be generated in the continuum," and thus one will be filled with confidence even in the extremely subtle points of practice. At that time, one will be able to understand the unique functions of accomplishing qualities and preventing faults, and one will understand that this is absolutely necessary in accepting or rejecting anything, and that merely doing these is not enough, so that one will not abandon any Dharma, and these thoughts will arise first.
