The thought arises, 'I am independent.' If the ultimate moment is taken as that moment, then the ultimate distinctions explained as 'Shall I steal it?' etc., become meaningless. If that previous thought arises, even if it is not known as a burden etc., it fulfills the ultimate condition. If it does not arise, even if it is known as a burden etc., the ultimate condition is not accomplished. Furthermore, the scriptures indicate the boundaries of things through being known as a burden etc., but do not indicate the boundaries of the arising of the thought of independence, therefore that ultimate moment is not reasonable. If someone argues that, regarding the previous dispute, some say: The ultimate moment spoken of in the scriptures is uncertain, but in most cases it is considered so, as an answer. But here, in the first example, before being known as a burden, the thought of completion arises, and when it is known as a burden, it may not arise. But that is not the point. However, like clothes scattered by the wind, if (a monk) thinks: If I collect these things and can make them a burden, I will definitely get them, but before that I will not get them. If he hesitates, that is said in reference to a stealing monk. The commentary also says: In general, wanting to exclude the purpose of the action that has been done, so 'after doing' means: After doing it, will I dare to steal it? etc. And 'after collecting' means: After collecting it, will I dare to steal it? etc. Because it is said so. The later dispute is also unreasonable. The ṭīkā says: When the wind scatters clothes, or other things are scattered, if the monk thinks that those things can be a burden, thinking: Shall I steal it? If he collects those things, like this, even if clothes etc. exist and are moved before being known as a burden by the measure of the value of five mashakas etc., he will not fail because at that time he has the thought of collecting, but not the thought of stealing. Here the scripture is: For example, if the clothes laid out by a dyer are blown away by the wind, and that monk, through his actions, as long as he does not take them away, does not hide them, he will commit a minor offense. If he takes them away, hides them, collects the clothes, rolls them into a bundle, and hides them from one place to another, he commits a major offense. Therefore, it speaks of clothes.

Collecting scattered items, and moving flowers and fruits that have been picked to another place, this is called stealing, and its value needs to be estimated. As it is said, similarly in the following, uphold fairness and eliminate doubts. The doubt arises from the scriptures: If the load and the pile are not clearly stated, and they are hidden from one place to another, then when collecting scattered clothes, and when picking flowers and fruits, there is also a transfer, so is it necessary to estimate the value? To eliminate this doubt, the commentary mentions: Even if moving from one place to another, it does not constitute defeat, because at that time there is no thought of stealing. This implies that at the time of constituting defeat, there is a thought of stealing in the mind. Therefore, ultimately it depends on the intention, which is very clear. Moreover, as mentioned before, this is the thought of stealing that depends on the ultimate intention, and this can only be the thought of acquisition. In the first two sutras, it is mentioned that the thought of stealing is needed at the final moment, which also applies to other situations, because there is no difference in the reason. Regarding the word "universal," the basis for the doubt to be eliminated is what is said in the scriptures: "If it exceeds the boundary," but it does not mention "the boundary outside the scope of the substance," so does it refer to the boundary within the scope of the substance? This is what the former people said. Regarding the word "its characteristics," since the two boundaries are clear, the demarcated boundary is: demarcated by carving, walls, or rivers, etc., which is commonly recognized in the world. The other is: a completely imperceptible behavior, whose essence is not known in the world. Its characteristics are: hard and sounding like earth, that is, hard and sounding. A crack on one side is a split. Writing in letters is writing. A color changing from one to another is another color. Door panels and fences, etc., are intervals. Field ridges, etc., that appear when plowing are obstacles. The two sides of the field ridge do not belong to it, because they are located in the middle of the two parts of the land extending from those two sides, so they are boundaries. If the carved edge and opening are on the same side, they should be considered as one. If it is not like that, but is separated by clods, mounds, or fences, they should be considered as different parts. The body of one living being is considered one obstacle.
