The transgression of eating at an improper time, the transgression of exceeding the ritual, and the transgression of taking what should not be taken, are five in total. The first is twofold: taking excessively and eating excessively. The first has three aspects, the first of which is the transgression of repeatedly eating excessively in one day, which has four aspects. From the perspective of the fundamental branch, the object of taking is a householder who possesses the five qualities, and from the depths of their heart, they desire to have the characteristics of food, calling out not for the sake of the Sangha but for their own sake. The food to be taken belongs to any of the five types of food, is not leftover food, is suitable and reaches the amount of one portion, the previous and subsequent donors each own it, and for the subsequent food, there is no gain of cloth that reaches the length of one cubit or its value. The time is one day, not a time of famine. The basis is not a sick person who cannot survive on one portion of food, and those who have done one sweeping or mandala-sized work for the sake of offering to the Three Jewels, and those who have traveled more than half a yojana on the same day, are not those who have not laid out hard objects. The intention is to have unerring cognition, the motivation is to want to eat a second portion of food, the action is to begin eating, and the ultimate is to swallow into the throat. Entering a householder's home to beg for food before the time has come, and when entering a householder's home to beg for food, the resident should examine each of their retinue and those who have suddenly arrived, and unnecessarily cutting off one's own food due to anger, etc., are all misdeeds to be learned.

Taking and starting to eat with the five-limbed, finally swallowing into the throat. Not eating food there, but staying for the second day, and the householder not actually residing, and eating in the dwelling place controlled by internal and external monastics and relatives, is a transgression. Third, taking more than the limit from one donor, taking more than about three alms bowls, is a downfall, of which the root limb of the four limbs is that the donor from whom it is taken is a householder with five qualities, and completely limits the amount, and is not a forceful person who says, "Take as much as you need." The object taken is cooked, timely, edible food, and exceeds the amount of two and a half small Magadha bushels of cooked rice. It belongs to that donor himself. The place of eating is a place other than the place where it was taken. The thought is not confused, and the motivation is to want to eat more. The action is taking with speech that has five characteristics, and starting to eat in another place, finally swallowing into the throat. Causing others to take more and eating is a transgression. Second, eating beyond the limit, of which the first of the two is the downfall of eating after abandoning, of which the root limb of the four limbs is that it is something to be eaten, suitable, and not in the throat, and has a limit. It is other than soup, and has not been increased by oneself or someone similar to oneself. The time of eating is not a time of famine. The basis is that the abandonment is complete and one is not sick. The thought is to eat with certainty or doubt about what has been abandoned and not increased. The motivation is to want to eat. The action is starting to eat. Finally swallowing into the throat. The characteristics of complete abandonment have four limbs, the root limb being that it is not a time of famine, but timely food that is suitable and has a limit, a person who is suitable to be given and received by the giver and receiver, residing in a place where giving and receiving can be obtained, giving from the depths of one's heart. The motivation is to want to abandon, thinking from the depths of one's heart, "I will not eat this today." The action is speaking "Tseg go," etc., without adding the word "for a while," with speech that has five characteristics, or starting to stand up. The finality is understanding the meaning of what was said or abandoning the seat one was in. If one has completely abandoned and then eats without increasing, it will also become a downfall. The characteristic of increasing is what is increased by.
