Regarding the meaning of reliance, one should not be overly attached. If one does not rely on it, there will be the fault of afflictions. In short, if the words are not good, even if the meaning is good, one will not abide by it; if the words are good, even if the meaning is not good, one will abide by it. Some people slander Dharma speakers, saying that they only explain the words and syllables, and do not explain the meaning or do not understand the meaning. This is because the explainer has not even entered into the meaning of the words. Therefore, in the chapter on the four reliances in the Bodhisattva Bhumi, it should be done as previously stated. The Vinaya Sutra and the Samudra also say that this is the fault of disrespecting the Dharma. These three transgressions are, in order: abandoning wrong views, diligently engaging in listening, and being deficient in serving the guru in accumulating merit. And the meaning of relying on the letter is that, in order to despise the Dharma speaker, one relies on the words and syllables, as stated in the new commentary. To act contrary to benefiting sentient beings has two aspects: relating to the general object to be benefited, and relating to the specific object. The first has two aspects: not accomplishing benefit, which means not becoming a helpful friend. That is, from determining actions to doing good deeds, if the two minds do not provide help in these eight things, then the afflicted mind and the other mind are not afflicted. The other aspects are as previously explained, and the correct terminology refers to not knowing the terminology of the languages of various places, which Grolungpa said should be learned. Even if one has not done it, there is no fault from the point of view of the basis in five cases: being sick and unable to do it, having previously promised someone else, entrusting the ability to someone else, striving for a more excellent virtue than that, and being naturally dull-witted and unskilled in receiving teachings. From the point of view of action, there is one: relating to harmful things, relating to things that do not accord with the Dharma, and unreasonable things. From the point of view of the object: one is able to seek help oneself, or has a protector and support who can provide help and reliance. From the point of view of need, there are three: wishing to subdue by that method, protecting other greater afflictions, and protecting the internal discipline of the Sangha. Not eliminating harm has two aspects: not eliminating suffering, and not eliminating the cause of suffering. The first has two aspects: not eliminating the distinctions of suffering, which means abandoning the care of the sick. That is, when one is afflicted or encounters illness, the two minds do not provide care and so on for the sick.
