The fault of the main practice is: not abandoning the obscurations of meditative concentration. This means that if one accepts and does not eliminate any of the five obscurations that hinder meditative concentration, one is afflicted. To generate aspiration etc. in order to abandon it is without fault, as before. The five obscurations are: As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Excitement and regret, harmful thoughts and drowsiness, sleep and desire, and doubt, these five obscurations are thieves who steal the wealth of virtue, know this." As it is said, excitement and regret are one obscuration, and sleep and drowsiness are one obscuration. In this, there are two: the obscurations to be subdued and what leads to them, recognizing the Dharma, and how to subdue them. First, craving for desire is: craving and desiring the five objects of form, sound, etc., the mind follows the five objects, and what leads to it is the non-virtuous mind that clings to the attractive and pleasing characteristics of the objects. Harmful thoughts are: the thought of harming and hurting others, and what leads to it is the cause of anger, clinging to unattractive and displeasing characteristics. Drowsiness is: part of ignorance, the mind is not suitable for work and is drowsy. Sleep: here it is part of ignorance, the mind clearly withdraws from the object, and what leads to both is that the mind is not clear because it focuses on the characteristics of darkness. Excitement is: the aspect of non-peacefulness that belongs to attachment. Regret is: the mind's remorse, and what leads to both is the memory of relatives, regions, countries, and the appearance of immortality, as well as past playfulness, intimacy, joy, and enjoyment. Doubt is: doubting whether I existed in the past, and doubting the Three Jewels, the results of karma, and the Four Noble Truths, and what leads to it is the non-virtuous mind that focuses on the Dharma of the three times and the objects of that. How to subdue it has two: what antidote to subdue, and what kind of behavior to subdue. First, from the perspective of the Dharma among the three, the way to subdue is: the antidote to craving for desire is: meditating on the unattractive, such as bluishness and pus. The antidote to harmful thoughts is: cultivating loving-kindness.

Practice! The antidote to drowsiness and sleep is to properly grasp the signs of appearances such as the sun and moon, to make the mind clear, and to remember the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, discipline, generosity, and the deities. Also, focus on other objects that can become aids, uplift the mind, look at the directions, the moon, and the stars, and wash the face with clean water. The antidote to agitation and regret is to truly settle the mind within itself and make it a continuous samadhi. The antidote to doubt is to observe that in the past, what has occurred, and in the future, what will occur, etc., there is no self, but only the cause and effect of phenomena themselves, and thus to think properly, neither affirming existence nor denying non-existence, free from exaggeration and denigration. Furthermore, for all of these, reciting the words from the scriptures that condemn the five obscurations and the dharmas that lead to them with faults, and praise the benefits of being free from them, and contemplating their meaning, etc., will prevent the unarisen from arising and cause the arisen to cease. The method of applying effort from one's own perspective is: as soon as any of the five obscurations arises, that obscuration will afflict the mind with afflictions, diminish wisdom, and harm virtuous deeds, so recognizing that it is incompatible with one's own nature, feeling ashamed, not accepting it, and eliminating it. The method of applying effort from the perspective of the world is: when any of the five obscurations arises or is close to arising, thinking that if I generate these, then my teacher, the wise deities, and virtuous friends will condemn me, thereby preventing the unarisen from arising and abandoning the arisen. How should one apply effort through conduct? For drowsiness and sleep, one should get up and walk back and forth to apply effort, while for the other four, one should sit properly in the lotus position, focusing mindfulness to apply effort. Not accepting and eliminating these is not only during the time of samadhi but at all times. The subsequent fault is: "To view the taste of meditation as a quality." This means that when meditation arises in the continuum, if one craves its taste, that is, craves joy and bliss, etc., and views tasting the flavor as a quality, then one is afflicted. In order to abandon it, there is no fault in generating aspiration, etc., as before.
