To gather and settle what should be abandoned into virtue; to protect the vows of oneself and former friends, or to be in accordance with them; and to show a joyful face to those who dislike oneself, are resentful, or are suspected of turning their backs, in order to show the purity of inner thoughts, these are the five. To crave the taste of existence is to "think of entering samsara alone." Thus, many sutras say that bodhisattvas, like those who rejoice in samsara, do not rejoice in nirvana. If one misunderstands such statements, a bodhisattva should not rejoice in nirvana, but should turn away from it. One should not fear afflictions and near afflictions. One should not make the mind too distant from them. Thus, a bodhisattva must wander in samsara for three countless eons and cultivate bodhi. To think and speak in this way is a fault of affliction. Why is it a fault to think in this way? A bodhisattva should rejoice in nirvana and be disgusted with afflictions hundreds of thousands of times more than a shravaka. Thus, if a shravaka must do so to liberate himself alone from existence, what need is there to mention the effort of a bodhisattva to liberate all sentient beings from existence? That bodhisattva must cultivate the habit of being completely free from afflictions, as mentioned earlier, because if he is not liberated from those afflictions himself, he cannot liberate others from them. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "A noble hero who carries the heavy burden of sentient beings on his head does not look good walking slowly. Since he is bound by various bonds of self and others, he should generate a hundredfold effort." Thus it is said. Such a bodhisattva, although not an arhat, is superior to an arhat because he is completely free from afflictions and therefore enjoys contaminated things, and is skillful in means. Samudra says that even a shravaka with dull faculties can recognize the faults of samsara, so what need is there to mention a bodhisattva with sharp faculties and immeasurable wisdom? Thus, what is said in the sutras that one should not rejoice in nirvana and should rejoice in samsara refers to constantly clinging to the birth of existence.
