Killing and so on are the seven (sins) of body and speech. Regarding their basis: It is said in the scriptures that for sexual misconduct, a monastic Bodhisattva, in order to protect the teachings of the Hearers from being destroyed, should not engage in impure conduct in any way. This is a prohibition for monastics, while a lay Bodhisattva is taken as the basis. For the other six sins, such as not giving and taking, it is said that the Bodhisattva is the common basis. So, is the Bodhisattva who enters the basis of falling into sins such as killing a monastic or a lay person? If it is the former, then it is not permissible for sexual misconduct, but it is permissible for killing and so on. There is no such difference, because the two are the same in whether or not they fall into sin. If it is the latter, then it contradicts the scriptures, which make a special distinction for sexual misconduct but not for others. Furthermore, in the Compendium of Trainings, it says: If you see that there is a greater benefit for sentient beings from this, you should abandon the precepts. For Bodhisattvas who have become accustomed to many kalpas and have become their own nature, who have great compassion and skillful means, and who have complete virtues, will desire become an obstacle? This is impossible. The Sutra of Skillful Means also says: The Brahmin boy Star practiced celibacy for forty-two thousand years. When he was on the seventh step, he developed compassion and thought: I will break my vows, even if I fall into hell, I am willing to endure the suffering of hell, so that this woman may live and be happy. The son of the lineage, Star, then returned, grabbed the woman with his right hand, and said: Sister, you can have whatever you want. This contradicts this. If someone asks this question. There is no fault, because giving rise to the sin of not giving and taking requires the branch of taking for oneself, but when the Bodhisattva permits this situation, it is taken for the sake of others, so the sin of not giving and taking is not permitted. Therefore, if one enters the basis of falling into sins such as killing and lying, then a monastic should not practice it, just like impure conduct. So, why is it only for impure conduct that the distinction between monastic and lay is made? There is no fault, because even if actions such as killing, not giving, and lying occur, it is not certain that one will fall into sin, but it is a prohibition.

For those who have vows, if non-celibate behavior occurs, it will definitely become a root downfall, so this is specifically explained. This is not contradictory to the Compendium of Trainings either, because generally, celibacy itself is the supreme method for accomplishing the benefit of others, and there is no greater benefit to others in abandoning celibacy. In particular, if one touches the basis of a root downfall of individual liberation, when one sees that it can greatly benefit sentient beings, one can abandon the training and act, so this is permitted for laypeople, but not for monastics. If it were not like this, and it was permitted for monastics, then abandoning the training would be meaningless. In that case, the basis for engaging in actions such as killing for the benefit of others is stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "For those who have not attained the ground, this should be considered for practicing the six perfections, but not for others." This is the saying in the old translation, while the new translation says "those who have attained the ground." Some people think that if one has attained the ground, then it shows that one needs to practice the six perfections, and this statement is meaningless, so they think it is better to follow the old translation. Is this a valid thought? However, as the quote from the Compendium of Trainings stated earlier, it is not enough to practice the six perfections just because one has not attained the ground. It requires a bodhisattva who has become accustomed to the path over many eons, is skilled in means, and possesses great compassion. Moreover, after taking the bodhisattva vow, one must properly study the bodhisattva trainings, possess the mind of cherishing others over oneself, and for a bodhisattva who has no other means than killing, etc., if it is for the benefit of others, it is permissible, but it is not permissible for all Mahayana practitioners. If it is not permissible even to properly study the bodhisattva vow, then for those who claim to be Mahayana practitioners but do not protect the vows, even if they have what appears to be compassion and bodhicitta, it is absolutely not allowed. For example, in the individual liberation vow, if a sick monk does not eat food in the afternoon, it will harm the illness, but if he eats, it will be beneficial to the illness, so it is permitted for a sick monk to eat in the afternoon, but all other monks must protect this precept, and the situation is similar to this. The quote from the Compendium of Trainings was spoken about non-celibacy, but it is the same for situations of root downfalls such as killing, etc., and for the other four sins such as lying, and for things like taking what is not given, which will be discussed later, if there is a great need to act for the benefit of that sentient being, and when no other means are found, one must properly protect the bodhisattva vow, and at that time
