For those of us who claim to be Bodhisattvas and Tantric practitioners, if we say that even if we transcend these (precepts) we can be approved by the superiors, and completely indulge ourselves, then if we hold both the upper and lower precepts, a serious fault of violating the Bodhisattva vows will occur. It is pointed out here that in order to avoid the arrogance arising from contradicting the Tantric precepts, if the provisions of the two precepts are violated, then "unnecessary transcendence becomes a gross offense." If someone claims to be a Mahayana practitioner but does not keep any of the precepts, then what qualifications do they have to criticize others? Therefore, these people are defiling the Buddha's teachings with the dirty water of evil views, and all those who wish to improve themselves should avoid them like poison. The old commentary says: If a Bhikshu goes to the householder's house or the householder's wife's residence where there is no nearby cemetery to beg for clothes, he will commit a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. Like this, if one abides in the two precepts, abandoning the benefit of others and focusing on one's own benefit, one should understand that if this is allowed, it is also for the sake of focusing on one's own benefit, not for the benefit of others, otherwise one will commit the same offense as described in the Vinaya. Therefore, these three faults are in order: the fault of violating the precepts, the failure to accumulate merit, and the regression in benefiting sentient beings, which is the explanation in the new commentary. The second point is: If one has compassion, there is no non-virtue. Here, according to the scripture and the old commentary on the Twenty Verses, and the commentary on the Chapter on Ethics, except in the case where killing and other actions of the seven deeds of body and speech are allowed for the sake of others, if one does not engage in these actions for the sake of others, it is not said that there will be faults. But if we count according to the forty-six faults mentioned in the new commentary, this should also be counted as one fault. In addition, that commentary also seems to specifically explain the situation where one does not study in order to convince others. Even so, Jinasutra and Samudra, as explained, show that there are differences between Bodhisattvas and Sravakas in the provisions of the naturally sinful. For the Hinayana, naturally sinful acts are unforgivable, but for Bodhisattvas, if they make good use of skillful means, not only is there no sin, but they will also increase a lot of merit. What is that?
