In order to increase actions and the faith that was already present, the precepts that were established include not drinking alcohol, avoiding untimely food, etc., as well as digging the ground, touching fire, etc. Regarding these, one must learn like a Shravaka; if one does not learn, not only will one incur the fault of violating the Pratimoksha vows, but one will also incur a Dukkritta for violating the Bodhisattva vows. The reason for this is that even Shravakas, who only focus on their own benefit, if they learn the discipline of guarding the minds of others, what need is there to mention Bodhisattvas who focus on the benefit of others? Regarding this, if one does not learn with disbelief and disrespect, it is with afflictions; if one does not learn not because of laziness, etc., it is without afflictions. This is what the New Commentary says. Is this Dukkritta for all Bodhisattvas, both lay and ordained? If one asks this, the New Commentary understands it as being explained for ordained Bodhisattvas; however, lay Bodhisattvas also have many precepts that are common with the Pratimoksha vows. Learning the uncommon precepts is: For the sake of sentient beings, actions should be small. Considering that the Shravakas' benefit and actions are few, and that they abide in a small heart, the Buddha established precepts such as not needing to learn like Shravakas regarding the precepts of holding old clothes for more than ten or thirty days; if one learns like Shravakas, one will commit a Dukkritta. That is, if one does few things for benefit with two minds (good and bad), it is with afflictions; if one does it with two other minds (neutral), it is without afflictions. The reason for this is that Shravakas focus on their own benefit, only engaging in taming themselves and not considering the benefit of others, so it is appropriate to abide in few things for benefit based on the benefit of others, but Bodhisattvas, in all circumstances, act for the benefit of all sentient beings, focusing on the benefit of others, so it is inappropriate to have few things for benefit based on the benefit of others. Among these, few things for benefit means small desires. Few actions means not holding many possessions. A small heart means abiding in the noble lineage, which is being content with coarse robes, alms, and dwellings, and delighting in renunciation and meditation; these are the noble lineages, of which there are four. For the sake of others, even if a Bodhisattva needs a hundred or a thousand robes, he should seek them from Brahmins and laypeople who will not become relatives, that is, he should be a giver who is skilled at discerning the occasion.

If needed, one should first observe whether those sentient beings allow it, and if not, take the amount needed. Samuza (place name) said that one should observe whether one can endure it, and I took that meaning, saying that it is unreasonable to observe whether the benefactor will become poor and whether others will ridicule. Because this shows that there is no fault in asking for more than is reasonable. Like clothes, the alms bowl is also the same. Taking the thread of clothes and letting a weaver who is not a relative weave it is also like taking clothes, and there is no downfall. According to this treatise, if one lets a weaver who is not a relative weave it, even if one gives the weaving fee, there is a downfall, but the Vinaya says that the downfall is the fault of not giving the fee. For the sake of others, one should also prepare a hundred Monda (place name) mattresses and a hundred cushions to be placed on the ground. One should also possess more than one hundred million gold and silver. Jinasutra says that the mattress is made of silk cotton, and the cushion and mattress placed on the ground have fillings inside. Because the Monda mattress is given for the sake of others, silk cotton and black cotton and a mixture of two parts are also given. The so-called cushion placed on the ground refers to things that are allowed to be unused for six years. For those precepts that have little meaning and action, and that are based on trivial matters, one should not study them like the Shravakas. Those two precepts and the precepts below are the great teachings on how monks and other renunciants who hold the Bodhisattva vows learn the Pratimoksha precepts, that is, the Pratimoksha has two types of precepts: the precepts of self-nature and the precepts of restriction. The method of how to learn the first is shown by the precepts below. Among the restricted precepts, there are two types. For the precepts established to protect the minds of others, the new commentary says: Bodhisattvas are what others should learn most, and renunciants must protect their own trainings. As it is said, one must protect one's mind more than the Shravakas, and the precepts established for reasons such as little meaning must be transcended for the sake of others, so one does not protect them like the Shravakas, and these three types of precepts include all the Pratimoksha precepts. If one does not understand such distinctions, one will commonly regard the Pratimoksha precepts
