Since it only appears in this treatise, the defeats mentioned in the Compendium of Trainings are similar in function. The Sutra of the Essence of Space also speaks of faults, as it says: These root downfalls, for those who have truly entered the Great Vehicle, the first mistaken ones, will burn all the previously generated roots of virtue, becoming defeats, and fall from the place of bliss of gods, humans, and the Great Vehicle, and go to the lower realms. They will wander in samsara for a long time, and will be separated from virtuous friends. Regarding the distinction of pervasive entanglement, the way in which one does not abandon pervasive entanglement and the way in which one abandons it is: These four dharmas like the place of defeat, with small and medium pervasive entanglement, will not abandon the vows of discipline that have been properly taken, but with great pervasive entanglement, one will abandon them. Among them, like the place of defeat, as previously said, divided into four from the aspect of intention and eight from the aspect of application, such as attachment to gain and respect. These eight are representative, because in what is said in the Compendium of Trainings, if the great pervasive entanglement is not complete, it will not become a defeat, because there it is said that abandoning the Great Vehicle, which is more serious than the five inexpiable sins, and praising oneself and disparaging others due to attachment to gain and respect, if the great pervasive entanglement is not complete, it will not become a defeat, because it is said that way, it is clear that others also need that. However, for the arising of wrong views and the abandonment of the mind of enlightenment, it is enough for these to arise, and it is not necessary for the great pervasive entanglement to be complete, because it has already been said. Therefore, it should be understood that those mentioned in the Sutra of the Essence of Space that do not have complete great pervasive entanglement are any of the small and medium defilements, because in this treatise it is said that those that have not become defeats in the category of defeats are small and medium defilements. Identifying the great pervasive entanglement is: These four dharmas like the place of defeat, constantly practicing them without interruption, and not even generating a small amount of shame and embarrassment, and being satisfied with that, and rejoicing in that, and regarding that as a virtue, becoming such a person, it should be known that this is the great pervasive entanglement. This has four branches, the first of which is: From "defeat" to "practice", the so-called four dharmas, some commentaries
