Now, although the root downfall of abandoning the mind of enlightenment will occur, it will be shown below, so they are not counted as root downfalls. This defeat and the second defeat of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers abandoning the Dharma are different, the former is doctrine and the latter is realization, the former is abandoning by saying "it was not spoken by the Buddha," and the latter is abandoning by saying "it cannot cut the root of existence, so it cannot be liberated from samsara." The eleventh defeat is the defeat of praising oneself and disparaging others. Among these four, the object of speech is: to those who prostrate to them, also praising oneself out of jealousy, as quoted in the Compendium of Trainings, so it is the person who desires to slander, and the word "also" means that not only is praise and disparagement made to the object of disparagement, but to any person who is disparaged. Although the phrase "to those who prostrate to them" does not appear in the supplementary translation of the sutra, it is clear that it exists. What is said? It is speaking of one's own virtues and the unpraiseworthy aspects of others. The manner of speaking is: for the sake of gain and respect and verses, while performing activities such as expounding, reciting, and teaching the Great Vehicle, one says that oneself is a Great Vehicle practitioner who does not look to gain and respect, etc., while others are not, this is double-tongued. In short, the self-praise of proclaiming the lama of human dharma, except for the lama of human dharma in the following chapter, this and the two above only symbolically represent one aspect of self-praise. The motivation is to be jealous of others' gain and respect due to attachment to gain and respect. The sutra says four times that one speaks out of jealousy. When Master Shantideva explained the defeats mentioned in the Bodhisattvabhumi, he did not quote the first defeat because he considered it to have the same meaning as the defeat mentioned here, so it seems that the meaning mentioned in the Bodhisattvabhumi should be explained as it is explained here. If one were to follow the literal meaning of the Bodhisattvabhumi, then it does not contain those contents here, so I wonder if it is necessary to quote the contents of the Bodhisattvabhumi. However, it is sufficient to separately praise and disparage, and to be attached to any gain and respect, as mentioned before. Is the praise and disparagement true or false? The sutra says that, in short, it is double-tongued, and, in summary, because of falsehood, a very heavy downfall will occur. Samudra also said that he spoke of virtues and faults that did not exist.

In the explanation and new commentary on praise, it is also said that praise is to praise with true and untrue merits, that is, to praise falsely. The previous statement of "falsely praising" seems to show that truth and falsehood are similar, but according to the latter statement, the former meaning refers to the superiority and inferiority of merits, and the latter meaning refers to speaking falsely. The twelfth root downfall is: falsely claiming to have superhuman qualities. Regarding this, there are two situations, one is the object of speech: it is a person who can understand the meaning. The second is the way of speaking: after teaching the Dharma of emptiness, he says, "This is what I have directly realized, and I am teaching it to you out of compassion. If you practice like this, you will also directly realize it and become like me." Saying this. That is to say, in the absence of such realization, lying with a mind of afflictions such as jealousy, that is, when others can understand the meaning. Regarding this, if the basis is a bhikshu who holds the bodhisattva vows, there is a possibility of committing both root downfalls. In the commentary on the "Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva", it is said that merely by reading, one shows that one has realized the profound Dharma, and also allows others to accept it truthfully in the same way, saying that this is a root downfall, which seems to contradict the sutras. The thirteenth root downfall is: the root downfall of stealing the property of the Three Jewels. This refers to the fact that treasurers and ministers rely on the royal family to punish monks with fines. After doing so, they steal the property of individuals, sanghas, sanghas of the four directions, or stupas, and then offer them to those people. Those people also offer them to the royal family, and both the king and the ministers will commit root downfalls. Among them, the root downfall committed by punishing monks with property belongs to the third downfall, and the root downfall committed by stealing the property of the Three Jewels belongs to the first downfall, so this is the root downfall of accepting what is given. However, the first root downfall is stealing or instigating others to steal, while this one is the downfall of stealing or instigating others to steal property when others are punished with property. What is said here is about the property of individuals such as one, two or three bhikshus, which is a distinction. The rest is like what was said before, combine according to the situation. Downfall.
