The fourteenth is, the pārājika of enacting evil precepts, etc. There are two aspects to this. Regarding enacting evil precepts, the object of enacting the precepts is: the monks who practice the Dharma. The way the precepts are enacted is: with a loving thought, enacting precepts that abandon the mind-training that is in accordance with calm abiding and insight, and that increase afflictions. Regarding taking the possessions of rightful ownership without being given, there are four aspects. The owner of the possessions is: the monk who strives to abandon. If the owner of these possessions is a noble being and is offered to the Sangha, then this pārājika will become the first root downfall, therefore it is not a noble being, nor is it offered to the four directions of the Sangha. The possessions are any of their enjoyments. The thought is to have a hateful thought towards them. The action is: taking their possessions without being given and giving them to the reciter. The sutra says that both are root downfalls, the two refer to the royal family and the practitioner who speaks unpleasant words to them. To say that it is a root downfall for the reciter contradicts the sutra. The term "they" refers to the eight categories of root downfalls that are added at the end, and the sutra says that these eight are the initial downfalls. The term "sentient being" refers to their faults. The term "dream" refers to the method of recovering from downfalls, which can be found in the Compendium of Trainings. If a root downfall occurs, one must take the vows again as stated in the sutra. If this is not the case, how can confession restore it? Confession can prevent falling into the lower realms as stated in the sutra, but to restore it, one must take the vows. In the Compendium of Trainings, the Skillful Means Sutra is quoted, which explains that even if a root downfall occurs, it can be restored, so it will not be elaborated on here. On the other hand, if the common branches of these downfalls, that is, all the dharmas of great entanglement, are not complete, then the minor and medium downfalls that belong to the category of downfalls can be confessed, so it is also shown that one can recover from them through confession, which will be explained later. Abandoning the mind of enlightenment means abandoning the aspiring bodhicitta. Regarding this, the Skillful Means Sutra says that it is a root downfall, and the basis for generating this root downfall must have the bodhisattva vows, therefore the first moment of abandoning the mind has vows, and from the second moment onwards, the vows are abandoned, not just abandoning.

From this, one will not become a non-Bodhisattva. It should be understood similarly for one who has generated wrong views. Therefore, for these two, merely occurring will become a root downfall, without needing to rely on the complete fulfillment of common branches, while for others it is needed, and will be explained. The two lines "attachment and miserliness" show the two of not giving to those who ask for Dharma and wealth, and the three lines such as "etc." have also been spoken together with the differences in translation. Regarding the first line of the verse "afflictions," in some translations quoted in the Ornament of the Sugata's Thought, saying "because of afflictions, following others" is good, because in the Bodhisattva-bhumi it says that one believes that one's own or others' cunning is the supreme Dharma. If one connects "actions like Dharma done by afflictions," that is one's own improper attention, and if one connects "actions like Dharma done by following others," that is following others' cunning behavior. The action of defeat or the fault is: if one does any of those dharmas like the place of defeat, even if it is any one of them, in this life there will be no opportunity to accumulate great collections of enlightenment and to fully uphold them, so what need is there to say if one does all of them? In this life, there is also no opportunity to make one's intention completely pure, because one is pretending to be a Bodhisattva, and is not a true Bodhisattva. Among them, accumulation means increase, and fully upholding means generating, as explained by the teacher Yönten Ö. Other explanations say that there is no power to accumulate collections close to the realization of the bhumis. Completely pure intention is explained by all the commentaries as attaining the bhumis, which is the first bhumi. In short, if one downfall occurs, it is impossible to attain the first bhumi in that life, and there is no opportunity to increase the great collection of causes close to it, to increase what already exists and to generate what does not exist, so what need is there to say if downfalls occur again and again? Therefore, even if a downfall occurs, do not think that one can still take the Bodhisattva vows, but one should risk one's life to protect oneself from being permanently stained by the root downfall. It is also said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Thus, those with powerful downfalls, and those with powerful Bodhicitta, if they alternately act as enemies in samsara, it will take a long time to obstruct the attainment of the bhumis." Thus it is proclaimed. The four defeats are
