It should be done to all who are in accordance. The way of showing is to show to others as one likes it, and to instill his views into others. A brief summary of these meanings appears in the Twenty Verses: From intense afflictions arising, Whoever causes the vows to be broken, Those four faults of his, Should be regarded as similar to defeat. By attachment to gain and respect, Praising oneself and disparaging others, To those who are suffering and without protection, Being stingy and not giving Dharma and wealth, Not listening even when others confess, Scolding others out of anger, Abandoning the Great Vehicle, Showing what appears to be the true Dharma. So it is said. Intense afflictions are great entanglements. 'His' refers to the one who holds the Bodhisattva vows. Because of overcoming others, these cause the vows to be lost and destroyed, therefore it is overcoming. It is similar to defeat only because the cause of the vows being lost is the same, but it is not completely the same, because a monk who has committed defeat cannot be restored, but this one can. So says Bodhi Bhadra. Just as a Hearer loses his qualification by harming himself and others through the lust of sexual intercourse, so here too, harming oneself and others through craving for gain and respect. Just as a Hearer who steals the wealth of others out of greed will be defeated, but here, if one has Dharma and wealth and does not give it, then it is defeat. A Hearer who does not kill will be defeated, but here, generating a mind of torment towards sentient beings and causing harm with hands and so on. If the perpetrator does not listen to the expiation, then it is defeat. A Hearer who proclaims the Dharma that he has attained without having it will be defeated, but here, not showing what one has, and slandering the true Dharma and showing what is not Dharma, therefore it is defeat, as said by Ocean Cloud. Other commentaries also consider that the defeat of the Pratimoksha vows is the same in number and motivation, and that it is the meaning of similar to defeat. Here, regarding the way of becoming defeated, some Tibetans say: The scripture says that there are four things like the place of defeat, and it says 'Those four faults of his,' therefore there are only four, and it is unreasonable to make it eight, therefore according to this view, each defeat needs to gather two things like praise and disparagement. Some Tibetans also consider praise and disparagement to be separate

Therefore, one will also fail, so it is said that there are eight and four defeats of the Pratimoksha, totaling twelve, just like the reasoning of the staff and coarse cloth. If one is attached to gain and respect, praises oneself, and disparages others, one will fail, let alone engage in sexual activity? Arguments are made through these means. This is called "Ocean Cloud Desire." In the commentary on the Bodhisattva Bhumi, there is not even a trace of it, but in the commentary on the chapter on ethics said to have been written by Samudra Megha, it says, "If one is not attached to gain and respect, etc., why even mention not engaging in the four activities such as sexual activity?" This shows the opposite of the defeats of the Pratimoksha, because it does not show these as defeats for Bodhisattvas, and there is not a single reliable scripture, so it is entirely self-made. Saying there are four defeats is from the perspective of intention, namely, attachment to gain and respect, stinginess with possessions, the mind of harming sentient beings, and the four defeats of delusion in wrongly establishing the Dharma. Saying there are eight is from the perspective of action, namely, praising oneself, disparaging others, not giving Dharma, not giving wealth, harming sentient beings, not accepting confession, abandoning the holy Dharma, and showing defeats that appear like Dharma. Therefore, saying there are four does not contradict saying there are eight. Therefore, in the Ornament of the Thought of the Sage, it is also said, "In the Bodhisattva Pitaka, there are only four root downfalls." It is also said that these four downfalls of praising oneself and disparaging others, etc., are each divided into two, so there are eight. Just as it is said. In this text, the eight such as praise and disparagement are separately stated, and Ocean Cloud says in the case of the second defeat that if one does not give to a destitute beggar or does not distribute the Dharma, one will fail. Because failure is said for each branch, and this reasoning is the same for the other three, Abhidharma also says there are eight, and in the commentary on the Compendium of Sutras, it is said that Asanga clearly explains that there are eight defeats. The former spiritual friends who transmitted from glorious Dipamkara also considered there to be eight, so there should be eight defeats. In the Compendium of Trainings and the Twenty Verses, in the case of the third defeat, it is summarized into one.
