Having and yet being attached by nature, to those who come begging suffering from poverty, hunger, helplessness, and lack of support, being stingy and not giving material things, and to those who come seeking Dharma, being stingy with the Dharma and not giving teachings, this is a downfall for a Bodhisattva, like the second root vow. There are four aspects to this: the beggar, the object to be begged for, the place to beg, and with what kind of intention not to give. Among these, the beggar refers to: those who suffer from a lack of wealth, those who are hungry from a lack of food, and those who are helpless like a protector (referring to the protector of orphans), and some commentaries say that there are also those who lack relatives or support that can provide help. In short, it refers to those who are lacking these two kinds of enjoyment, and there is no one else who can eliminate this lack other than a Bodhisattva now. Moreover, they are begging sincerely and coming to you for the sake of seeking Dharma. The Samudra-krta says, "If the beggar appears." The object to be begged for refers to: not swords or other unsuitable objects, nor poisons or other things that should not be given, which refers to situations related to harm. The place to beg refers to: as the new commentary says, "There are objects that can be given, and there is a clear understanding of the Dharma," which refers to what one possesses. The intention refers to: being overwhelmed by the stinginess of miserliness, and resolving not to give. The scriptures say that not giving material things is having a hard heart, and not giving Dharma is being stingy, but both the new commentary and the Samudra-krta say that both material things and Dharma are not given due to stinginess. It is correct to understand it this way in the Twenty Verses as well. Some Tibetans say that it is not enough to just resolve not to give, but that the beggar must also lose hope, which does not appear in any Chinese texts, and it does not make sense in meaning either. The third is: For a Bodhisattva, one should not abandon them just because they have spoken harsh words, but rather increase the entanglement of anger like that, being overwhelmed by anger, striking sentient beings with hands or feet or sticks, committing various harms, making various threats, holding only intense anger in their hearts, even if others whip them,

Not listening to advice, not being patient, and not letting go of anger in one's mind is also the third dharma that is like a defeat for a Bodhisattva. This has two aspects: the thought and the action when gathering. The first is: a Bodhisattva becomes angry with others, speaks harsh words, and not only that, but the anger does not subside but increases, and uses it to suppress the other person. The second is: influenced by that, physically or through what the body can reach or what is related to the body, harming others by hitting them, putting them in trouble, etc., or intimidating them by whipping, binding, etc. The object here, for sentient beings, it is not clear which category it is specifically, but it seems necessary to understand it as sentient beings of the same kind as oneself. Because the object of harsh words seems to be those who have the ability to speak, and it is also said in the Compendium of Trainings: hitting those who break the precepts is a root downfall. Therefore, it is said in this way. Not accepting confession has four points: the confessor, the way of confessing, the motivation, and the essence of not accepting confession. The confessor is: as it is said in the New Commentary and the Jinasutra (ཛི་ན་སུ་ཏྲ,梵文名待考): "Having done harm, even if the sin of harm is compensated by confession," it means that the person who previously caused harm to the Bodhisattva now sincerely wants to confess. The way is: keeping up with the times and in accordance with the Dharma, expressing the intention of asking for forgiveness. The motivation is: holding a grudge against the previous harm, with anger filling the heart. The essence is: not listening to advice, not accepting forgiveness, and not letting go of anger in the mind. The fourth is: slandering the Bodhisattva's Dharma treasury, or transforming one's own or others' false things as if they were sacred Dharma, rejoicing in it, proclaiming it, and insisting on it, this is a place of defeat for the Bodhisattva, like the fourth Dharma. This has two aspects: the basis for abandoning the Great Vehicle and the way of abandoning. Among them, the basis for slander is: the Bodhisattva's Dharma treasury, both profound and vast, is the common ground of the Sangha that proclaims all of this. The way of abandoning is: slandering as described later. For teachings that appear similar, there are also two points: what needs to be explained is: it is not clearly stated elsewhere, it is only said that what Samudra (ས་མུ་དྲ,梵文名待考) did is a temporary teaching or a non-Buddhist teaching. However, it is similar to the true Dharma, but not similar to the Great Vehicle, so it is a black teaching and follows.
