So, how many of the training precepts arising from the Sutras should a beginner study? For a beginner, it is a fault not to study all the Bodhisattva precepts, except for the two cases where the Buddha has directly forbidden them, and those that, although not forbidden, cannot actually be practiced during the beginner's stage. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings: 'Whatever is generally taught in terms of a Bodhisattva, or due to being unable to become accustomed to it or due to prohibition, a beginner Bodhisattva should not study it. If it is not these two, then one should study everything.' Therefore. When studying everything except for the two exceptions, there is no downfall if one is unable to do it. As it says in the same text: 'Even in that case, if one is unable to protect other precepts while accomplishing one precept, there will be no downfall.' As it says in the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra: 'At the time of giving, negligence towards morality, equanimity, and so on, are extensively taught.' One should not be lax in this, and it is not that one should not practice the others, but one should practice them as much as possible. As it says in the Ten Bhumi Sutra. Therefore. Regarding whether or not one will fall into downfall when studying these precepts, there are two situations: The first is, in order to generate all the happiness and joy of all sentient beings, and to pacify all suffering and unhappiness, if one does not diligently exert oneself with body, speech, and mind from the depths of one's heart without wavering, and forgets about it, there will be a downfall. It is the same even if one forgets for just a moment. Even if one diligently exerts oneself, but does not seek the conditions conducive to it, and does not strive to counteract the obstacles to that diligence, and forgets about it as before, there will also be a downfall. If one does not generate a great antidote to the two with small suffering and unhappiness, and even if one forgets for a moment in order not to harm small things in order to accomplish great things, there will be a downfall. There is no downfall for not practicing precepts that one cannot do oneself. Because there is no precept prescribed for those, because there is no need. If one tries to do those, one will fall into downfall, and that downfall is included in the general confession of sins, so one should confess it specifically.

Thus, one can be liberated from it without needing anything else. If one does not diligently practice the precepts of ability, one will err. The inherent transgressions mentioned here seem to be from the perspective of entering wisdom. The second way to fall is: In short, there are two types of downfalls for a Bodhisattva: falling into something without examination, and falling even after examining but exceeding the proper limits. The first is: If one does not discern what is reasonable and unreasonable in what one is capable of doing, and then either undertakes it, turns away from it, or remains indifferent, one will fall. The second is: Having discerned what should and should not be done, if one exceeds the proper limits in entering, turning away, or remaining indifferent, and thus engages in actions contrary to these, even exceeding the mockery of a Chandala slave, it is still considered a downfall. This is stated in the Compendium of Trainings, within the general framework of precepts. A brief summary of what should and should not be done is found in the Twentieth Verse: Others and oneself, both are fine. Even suffering, whatever is beneficial. Benefit and happiness, all should be done. Happiness yet unhelpful, should not be done. So it is said. Among these, benefit refers to that which is free from afflictions and without fault, and therefore will ripen into happiness in the future as well. Happiness refers to the feeling of pleasure. Temporary happiness with ultimate benefit is certainly to benefit oneself and others; temporary suffering with ultimate harm is certainly not to be inflicted on oneself and others. Temporary suffering, if it benefits the future, must be done. For example, preventing someone from engaging in evil deeds condemned by the noble ones, although it may cause temporary suffering, is like a bitter medicine that is very unpleasant to taste, but is taken because it benefits the illness, even though it seems harmful in the short term. Actions like sexual misconduct, although they may seem pleasant in the short term, will increase much suffering in the future, and must be prohibited, just like delicious fruit containing poison. This should be understood in detail in the chapter on the causes of benefit and happiness for oneself and others in the Bodhisattva's path. Specifically, there are six points: the downfalls to be abandoned, the method of guarding the mind from them, the method of restoration after failure, the intention behind attachment being described as a minor offense, the distinction between major and minor offenses, and the cause of abiding in contact with happiness. The first point is: What kind of basis for generating downfalls is it here that generates the category of downfalls? The basis is, for everything, a disturbed mind.
