Threatened by feelings of suffering, it should be known that there is no great fault for those who have not taken vows. As stated in the scriptures, one must possess two qualities: having received the vows and not abandoned them, and having a mind that abides in mindfulness. The categories or divisions of downfalls are definitely only two, as stated in the old commentary on the "Twenty Verses": Therefore, the faults of the Bodhisattva vows are only of two kinds: those that belong to the category of defeat, and those that belong to the category of misdeeds. It is not like the Bhikshu vows, which have five categories of faults. So it is said. The new commentary and the "Adornment of the Sugata's Intent" also state that the nature or category of downfalls is only two, and the meaning of the scriptures also remains the same. Therefore, it is not reasonable for some Tibetans and the difficult commentary of the Krishnacharyas to say that the Bodhisattva vows must guard against defeat, gross transgressions, and misdeeds, thus dividing them into three categories. If it were reasonable, then the minor and intermediate downfalls would have to become gross transgressions, because these are stated in this scripture as being of the nature of defeat and misdeeds. Therefore, the nature of minor and intermediate downfalls is misdeeds, but the category or division is the category of defeat, just as the gross transgressions and misdeeds in the case of defeat are placed in the category of defeat. Thus, there are two types of downfalls to be abandoned: the category of defeat and the category of misdeeds. The first has five points: the nature of each defeat, their actions, the distinction of the three entanglements, the difference of recoverability, and incidentally explaining the cause of abandonment. The first has two types: what is said in this scripture, and what is said in other scriptures. The first is: Thus, for those who abide in the Bodhisattva's discipline, there are four dharmas that are like places of defeat. What are these four? In this regard, there are two types of branches that lead to defeat: common and uncommon. The common ones will be explained at the time of the distinction of entanglements. There are four uncommon branches, the first of which is: Being particularly attached to gain and respect, and thus praising oneself and disparaging others, is the first dharma that is like a place of defeat for a Bodhisattva. There are three points to this: the place where one speaks, what is said, and the speaker.

It is the arising intention. First, the object is: Because this is a similar defeat based on these, it is necessary to have a sentient being who is different from oneself, who can speak and understand the meaning, and who is of the same kind as oneself. Although it is not clearly stated, it can actually be obtained. The subject matter is: one's own merits and the faults of others, that is, praising oneself and slandering the places respected by other virtuous beings. There are four kinds of arising intention: the degree of attachment to gain and respect, the degree of attachment of the object holder, the difference in the object of obtaining gain and respect, and examining whether it is necessary to be attached to both gain and respect for the arising intention. Among the degrees of gain and respect, gain is: clothes, food, housing, and riding animals, etc., any kind of gain is acceptable. Respect is: showing respect with beds and cushions, etc. The attachment of the object holder is: not just seeking gain and respect for the sake of offering to the Three Jewels and relieving the poverty of the lower classes with compassion, but rather generating craving for gain and respect from the aspect of one's own nature, that is, being particularly attached. The difference in the object is: for gain, it is necessary that oneself and the property are not the same, otherwise, praising oneself and slandering others would be meaningless. For respect, because it is also sought for the sake of one's own retinue, it is not necessary for the property to be separate. Whether both are necessary for the arising intention is: For both praise and slander, it is necessary to be attached to any one of gain and respect, it is not necessary for both to be present. Speaking any kind of praise or slander with such an arising intention, and the other person understands the meaning, is the first similar defeat. The commentary on the Twenty Verses says that others refer to the places respected by virtuous beings, and the work by Samudra also says that others refer to virtuous beings, which is the same as the former. The principles of what is said in the Sutra of Akashagarbha and these two will be explained below. Gain and respect and attachment to them, the new commentary says: Because it can be obtained, it is gain, that is, clothes and food, etc. Respect is to serve well, and being particularly attached to these is being particularly attached to them. The work by Samudra also says: Gain refers to the forms of food, clothing, and wealth, etc. Respect is drawing pictures, bowing, serving, and beds and cushions, etc. The second is enjoyment.
