Moreover, if it is not present, and if one does not possess those qualities, one must search for it even if it is far away, as stated in the commentary on the Compendium of Sutras. The new commentary states that if one's previously taken vows have deteriorated and are being restored, or if one takes vows without respect, then a ceremony without a lama is not permissible, and one must rely on a ceremony with a lama. The latter states that even if there is a lama, if one takes vows oneself without respect for him, that is indeed true. However, for restoration, the old commentary states that if there is a lama, one should take vows from him, and if there is not, one may take a ceremony without a lama. To demonstrate this, the bodhisattva's ceremony without a lama is cited as proof, which is the view of the noble Asanga. For he said that when restoring vows, if there is no person who possesses those qualities. Now the teachings are very degenerate, and especially the entrance to all the higher and lower vehicles, having taken the higher and lower vows, cherishing and protecting one's own training like the apple of one's eye, has become as rare as stars in the daytime. Therefore, it is impossible to take the Pratimoksha and Secret Mantra vows for the first time through a ceremony without a lama. Moreover, the object of taking vows, as stated in the scriptures, not to mention being fully qualified, even one in whom merits outweigh faults is very rare. However, this bodhisattva vow, even if one does not find a qualified object when taking it for the first time, if one takes it before a statue with a pure ceremony, a complete sign will arise. Therefore, the way of obtaining it for the first time is different from the other two vows, so wise people should take this vow well and strive to protect it with great enthusiasm and manly vigor. On this, the noble Shantideva said: First, my life has a result. I have also obtained a good human body. Today I am born into the Buddha's lineage. Now I have become a son of the Buddha. Like this, if one obtains this vow, one should think that it has great meaning, and that one has extracted the essence of obtaining a human body, and that I have also entered among the sons of the Buddha. Now, no matter what, I must. Engage in actions that are in accordance with the lineage. For this faultless Sangha lineage. I will not let it become defiled, I will do it like that. Like this, now no matter what happens, one should generate the thought that one will not be defiled by the defilement of falling. Taking the

That has been explained. The way to protect is twofold: a general explanation of the way to protect, and a specific explanation. The general explanation is this: a bodhisattva who abides in the vow of morality of a bodhisattva, should examine himself and understand what is permissible for a bodhisattva to do and what is not. After that, he should practice and protect in accordance with how he has established it. Also, one should listen from the collection of bodhisattvas or the mother of the collection, and one should practice in accordance with how the thousands of bases of training of a bodhisattva have been taught in such and such sutras. Also, in the "Compendium of Trainings" it says: "The vow of a bodhisattva comes from the extensive Great Vehicle." And: "Do not abandon a virtuous friend, always look at the sutras." It is said that protection is accomplished through these methods, and not abandoning a friend who is mainly accustomed to the place of training of a bodhisattva is the supreme method of protection. Furthermore, in general, one must listen to the precious sutras, and especially the "Bodhisattva Grounds" and the "Compendium of Trainings." Even if that is not possible, if one does not listen to at least the chapter on morality, one will become very ignorant of what a bodhisattva should learn. Therefore, the Great Vehicle is just a name that can deceive children, but what wise person who has found certainty in the practice of the great treatises of the Great Vehicle will be happy? Having listened to that, one must diligently learn what one should learn, and not act like a poor person counting the wealth of a rich person. In the Compendium it says: "Even if one speaks much about lineage, the unrestrained will not act accordingly. Just as a shepherd counts the livestock of others, they do not receive the share of a renunciate. Even if one speaks little about lineage, but practices the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and abandons attachment, hatred, and ignorance, they receive the share of a renunciate." And also in the "Introduction to Practice" it says: "One should practice these with the body, what is accomplished by uttering words? Does merely reading medical treatises benefit the sick?" Therefore, it is said.
