It is done. The merits of the Bodhisattva who acts in this way greatly increase and do not diminish. This Bodhisattva's discipline is superior to all disciplines, surpassing them with four distinctions. The four are: it is unsurpassed because there is nothing higher; it is endowed with an immeasurable accumulation of merit because it gathers immeasurable fruits of merit; it arises from the extraordinary intention to benefit all sentient beings, so it arises from an extremely virtuous intention; and it is the antidote to all misconduct of the three doors for all sentient beings. If one takes the Pratimoksha vows, the merit of the Bodhisattva's discipline cannot even approach one hundredth, one thousandth, a number, a part, a count, a simile, or a cause of that merit. The offering of gratitude is: both the teacher and the student should again make offerings as before to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who reside in the boundless and limitless realms of the ten directions, and with the desire to touch their feet with their heads, they should prostrate and then rise. Not proclaiming the vows lightly: Although one has grasped the meaning and understood all the words of this ritual for taking the Bodhisattva vows, one should not lightly proclaim the words or make the meaning known to sentient beings who hate and abandon the Bodhisattva's teachings, who do not believe and have no desire for them, without examining their capacity. Why? Because if they hear it, they will not believe and will be obscured by the great obscuration of not understanding, so they will slander, saying, 'It is bad, unreasonable, meaningless.' For one who slanders in this way, the amount of immeasurable accumulation of merit that a Bodhisattva abiding in the vows possesses, that much will be the sinful words of slander, the sinful view of clinging to it with the mind, and the sinful pervasive thoughts of acting with consciousness. As long as all of these are not abandoned in all ways, one will only possess that much non-meritorious accumulation, so it is said. The glorious Dipamkara As summarized in the four concluding rituals, it is also clear in the scriptures. That Acharya makes the offering of gratitude after the request for knowledge, and acts as described in the scriptures.

Furthermore, if a thanksgiving offering is made at the end, it will be convenient in practice. The meaning of these is summarized in the Twenty Verses: To the Buddhas and their sons, I pay homage with respect and offer as much as I can. The discipline of the bodhisattvas who dwell in all directions and times, Which is the treasure of all merits, With that pure intention, Rely on the guru who abides in discipline and is wise, And receive it from one who is capable. At that time, for the sake of that virtue, The Buddhas and their sons, With a virtuous mind, will always, Think of you as a beloved child. These first two lines are symbolic of the joining ritual. The next six lines show what should be taken, the intention of the taker, and the object of taking. The next four lines praise the benefits and are symbolic of the concluding ritual. The ritual without a guru is: If there is no person with the qualities mentioned earlier, then in front of the image of the Thus-Gone One, one should take the vows of a bodhisattva, with the upper garment draped over one shoulder, kneeling with the right knee on the ground or squatting, and say: I, named so-and-so, beseech all the Thus-Gone Ones of the ten directions and all the bodhisattvas who dwell on the great earth. In their presence, all the grounds of training of a bodhisattva and all the vows of a bodhisattva, that is, the vows of individual liberation, the vows of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the vows of benefiting sentient beings, which all the past bodhisattvas have trained in, and all the future bodhisattvas will train in, and all the bodhisattvas who are now appearing in the ten directions are now training in, I will truly take. Say this three times and then stand up. All the rest should be understood as before, and the other rituals are said to be the same as the ritual with a guru. The commentaries do not mention the manner of accepting or rejecting the remaining parts, but is it sufficient to keep the questions, the request for knowledge, and the parts where one does not make a loud noise? Whether or not there is a guru, if it causes obstacles to the body, life, and celibacy, then it is near.
