Therefore, it is also said in the Sutra of the Collection of Righteous Dharmas: "Son of good family, a Bodhisattva should be dedicated to truth. Son of good family, speaking the truth correctly is speaking the Righteous Dharma. Son of good family, what is truth? It is that a Bodhisattva, having generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, does not abandon that mind even for the sake of life, nor does he deceive sentient beings. This is the truth of a Bodhisattva. If a Bodhisattva generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, but later completely abandons that mind and also deceives sentient beings, this is the lowest false speech of a Bodhisattva." The Noble Sutra of Ocean of Intelligence also says: "Ocean of Intelligence, just as a king or a great minister of a king invites all the people of a city, saying that he will give food, but then abandons them and does not give them food and drink, then he has deceived all those people. Those people, because they have not received food and drink, mock and again generate desire. Similarly, Ocean of Intelligence, a Bodhisattva vows to liberate those who have not crossed over, to free those who have not been liberated, to give breath to those who have not breathed, and to completely liberate from suffering those who have not completely been liberated from suffering. If he does not strive for much learning and other virtuous qualities related to the aspects of enlightenment, then that Bodhisattva is not acting as he has spoken, but is deceiving the world, including the gods. If the gods who have previously seen the Buddha see such a Bodhisattva, they will mock, ridicule, and condemn him, because those lords of offerings who promise to make offerings but cause the offerings to fall into ruin are rare. Ocean of Intelligence, therefore, a Bodhisattva should not speak any words that would deceive the world, including gods, humans, and asuras." Thus, if one makes a promise and does not keep it, one will fall into the lower realms, become the lowest of liars, deceive the entire world, including the Buddhas and their retinues, and be condemned by the gods, and so on.

One should recognize the faults in this way. Having seen the benefits and faults in this way, one should not abandon the generation of the mind of enlightenment and should firmly maintain the vows that have been taken. Regarding this, the glorious Lamp for the Path (Atisha) abandoned the explanation of benefits and gravity, starting from "son of good family" and ending with "firmly maintain the commitment." And at the end, he would ask, "Is it not to compete with others, or is it not forced upon you by others?" The earlier lamas would also add "Do you want it?" at the end of the previous four questions. And they would ask, "Are you taking these vows not to compete with others? Are you not being forced to take them against your will? Have you heard, known, believed in, or can you protect even a little of the Bodhisattva's Vinaya Pitaka or the mother of the Vinaya Pitaka?" When answering, there is a custom of answering with "I have heard a little," and so on. "Not transcended," and so on, refers to liberating the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have not transcended the obscuration of knowledge from that obscuration; liberating Brahma and others who have not been freed from the bonds of the two obscurations, such as ignorance, from those obscurations; liberating hell-beings and others who have not been released from suffering; and in order to establish beings who have not passed beyond non-abiding nirvana in nirvana, the teacher Bhava Bhatra taught in this way. Accumulating the accumulations means that individual liberation is attained merely by respecting the assembly of the Sangha, but this discipline is far superior to that, so it is attained by first making offerings to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Therefore, from that time on, one who desires to take the vows should drape the upper garment over one shoulder, sit in front of the image of the Thus-Gone One, and visualize the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have appeared in the past, future, and present, and the Bodhisattvas of the ten directions who reside on the great earth, who have attained profound wisdom and vast power, taking the ten directions as their object. And one should mentally recall the qualities of those who possess such vows, saying, "The qualities of those who possess such vows are like this," because this discipline is generated by an extremely virtuous intention, so from the depths of one's heart, with whatever effort one can make in the present, and with whatever strength of past causes there may be.
