Suppose that sentient beings as numerous as the dust motes in a great trichiliocosm all became kings ruling Jambudvipa, and they all said, "We will cut five ounces of flesh each day with our fingernails from the flesh of those who receive, hold, read, and fully understand the Great Vehicle, and in this way take their lives." Manjushri, if that bodhisattva is not frightened by such words, does not panic, does not become alarmed, and does not even give rise to a single thought of fear, is without despondency, without dread, without doubt, and strives to seek outwardly and fully embrace the Dharma, and strives to read and recite, that bodhisattva, Manjushri, is called a brave bodhisattva in generosity, a brave bodhisattva in ethics, a brave bodhisattva in patience, a brave bodhisattva in diligence, a brave bodhisattva in meditation, a brave bodhisattva in wisdom, and a brave bodhisattva in samadhi. Manjushri, if that bodhisattva does not become angry with those who kill him and does not give rise to thoughts of hatred and animosity, Manjushri, that bodhisattva is equal to Brahma, equal to Indra, and is immovable. Just as it is said in the sutras. Therefore, in this present age, respecting the precepts brings great fruition. As it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: For billions of kalpas, as many as the sands of the Ganges, with umbrellas, banners, garlands of lamps, and food and drink, with faithful minds, one has made offerings to billions of myriads of Buddhas. When the sacred Dharma is decaying, when the Sugata's teachings are dying out, holding one precept for even a single day, the merit of this is far superior. Therefore, one should respect the precepts. One should proclaim as it is said in the sutras. Regarding the weight of the precepts: the heavy ones are the root downfalls, and the light ones are the faults other than those. If these faults are not guarded against, there will be transgressions. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: Because in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness of the Sacred Dharma it is said: "Not giving after thinking a little will be reborn as a hungry ghost; not giving after making a vow will go to the hell realms." If one vows to accomplish the unsurpassed benefit of all beings but does not do it, what need is there to say more?
