In the commentaries on the Compendium of Topics and the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, even Nakpo also made separate classifications for the rituals of aspiration and entry. Regarding this, it is not considered reasonable to separate the rituals of entry and vows, but the tradition of the earlier teachers who first take the ritual of aspiration and make it stable, and then later perform the ritual of vows, is a good method for making the vows stable. So, in the Middle Stages of Meditation, it says: "Among them, the conventional truth is the first arising of the mind in the form of desiring unsurpassed and perfectly complete enlightenment, vowing to manifestly subdue all sentient beings with compassion, and becoming a Buddha for the benefit of beings." And, as in the ritual taught in the chapter on ethics, one should generate from a wise person who abides in the vows of a Bodhisattva. What is the meaning of what is said? In reality, it is promising to learn all the grounds of learning of the Bodhisattvas of the three times, so there is a promise to generate the mind, so it is not just the ritual of aspiration called the ritual of generating the mind. There are two types of content in the text: the ritual with a teacher and the ritual without a teacher. The first has three parts: preparation, main part, and concluding ritual. The first has five parts: supplication, accumulation of merit, urging the vows quickly, generating joy, and asking about obstacles. Supplication has two parts: the distinction of the individual and the distinction of the ritual. The distinction of the individual has two parts, the distinction of the basis is: what kind of basis is needed for taking the vows? Whether it is a Bodhisattva householder or a renunciate, one should, as mentioned before, want to learn the three trainings of the Bodhisattva's vows from the depths of one's heart, and make aspirations for perfect enlightenment, that is, generate the mind of aspiration according to the instructions. One should not give vows to those who only hold the vows but do not want to learn the Bodhisattva's vows and have not generated the mind of aspiration. Therefore, in order to rely on the Bodhisattva who wants to take the vows correctly, before giving the vows, one should proclaim the grounds of learning and the places of faults of the Bodhisattva as taught in the Bodhisattva Ground, the mother of the Bodhisattva's collection. If it is said like that, if one can or cannot

Having examined with diligence and distinguished with wisdom, being delighted to take vows, and not because one is unwilling but is forced by others to take them properly. Nor is it for the sake of competing with others, one should recognize the steadfastness of a Bodhisattva. By properly taking the vows of morality in accordance with the ritual, one should also measure and emulate it. Thus, this is different from the Vinaya, so before taking the vows, one should listen well and understand, and when one's mind is firm in guarding the precepts, then one should take the vows. If one possesses these intentions, the vows will arise; if one does not possess them, they will not arise. As it is said in the Compendium: 'If one takes vows in order to be praised by others, or to be abandoned by others, or to be made to take them by others, then that is merely taking them. It is not from one's own faith, after repeatedly examining from the depths of one's heart, and cherishing compassion for sentient beings, that one does not take them with the desire for virtue, that is also said to be not bound by vows. For he will not be united with the complete virtue, nor will he obtain the benefits of its fruit. Conversely, one should know that one who is bound by vows will be united with the complete virtue, and will also obtain the benefits of its fruit.' The difference of the object is: What kind of object is needed for taking vows? It is a Bodhisattva who has made aspirations, that is, one who has generated the aspiration of Bodhicitta, who is in accordance with the Dharma, who abides in the Bodhisattva vows, who is skilled in the Great Vehicle, who is able to grasp the words of the expression of requesting to receive the precepts, and who is able to understand their meaning. From what kind of person should one not take vows? Even if one is learned, one should not take the Bodhisattva vows from all Bodhisattvas, because their intention and conduct have declined. Among them, the decline of intention is: lack of faith, not being very devoted to the vows, or not being moderately devoted, or belittling or not striving. The decline of conduct is: the decline of the conduct of the six perfections. The first is: a greedy person who is attached to the body and possessions, and who is controlled by them, overwhelmed by attachment; one who has a great desire for what has not been obtained, and who is not content even when obtained.
