Just as one should strive for the increase of wealth, so too should one strive for the increase of Dharma. One should also strive to increase the wealth of others through one's own increase of Dharma. Just as one should strive for the increase of wealth, so too should one strive for the increase of Dharma. If one does not act in this way, it will be accompanied by faults, but if one acts in this way, it will be without faults. Thus, this is a summary of the discipline of properly taking the vows of a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva should always keep this in mind and study it. Thus it is said. Therefore, if in doing something for the sake of another person's Dharma or wealth, one's own vows that one has taken are actually broken, or even if they are not actually broken, they are in accordance with breaking them, and if the Dharma that one has previously attained or newly attains appears to be diminished, then there is no fault even if one does not act for the sake of others. Similarly, if in acting for the sake of others, one appears to be impoverished in terms of wealth, but one will not be impoverished in terms of Dharma, then it will be a fault if one does not act, and if one will be impoverished in terms of Dharma, then one should not act. Similarly, even if one's own Dharma and wealth increase, it will be a fault if one does not accomplish these two for others. There are also other ways of summarizing whether or not one will incur faults in acting for the sake of others: Here, if a Bodhisattva follows after the signs of benefiting sentient beings with a mind of attachment and a completely biased attitude, and generates a friendly thought, it will be accompanied by faults. If one follows after the signs of harming sentient beings with a mind of anger and a completely hostile attitude, and generates a hostile thought, it will be accompanied by faults. If one generates an ordinary thought and a thought of equanimity towards sentient beings who are neither harmful nor beneficial, it will be accompanied by faults. If someone comes requesting to be ordained, and one follows after the faults of the time and the faults of the end time, and does not allow them to be ordained, then there is no fault. If compassion

there is no fault in ordaining him by keeping his mind close. Just as ordination is done, so it should be understood that completing the ordination, giving residence, and gathering retinues should be done in the same way. With these aspects, the three aggregates of the Bodhisattva's precepts should be completely fulfilled. Thus it is said. In this way, one who has taken vows should cherish and study the three trainings, but the most important thing is to diligently strive for the precepts of the Pratimoksha, which are common to the seven groups of individual liberation. The Compendium of Trainings says: Among these three trainings, this is the training of discipline, which is the means of gathering and accomplishing. If it is restrained and protected, then the others will also be restrained and protected. If it is not restrained and protected, then the others will also not be restrained and protected. Therefore, if the Bodhisattva's training of discipline is broken, then it should be said that all the trainings are broken. Thus it is said. If so, when a Bodhisattva takes vows, is it permissible to take a portion of the three trainings, or is it necessary to take the complete three trainings? The Bodhisattva's vows do not have many levels of vows like the individual liberation vows, but only one kind. Therefore, when taking them, one must take them by promising to study everything without interruption. Thus, the Compendium of Determinations says: If any one of the three trainings of a Bodhisattva is not complete, should it be said that he is restrained by the Bodhisattva's vows, or should it be said that he is not restrained? It should be said that he is not restrained. Thus it is said. If so, the Compendium of Trainings says: Therefore, one should rely on one's own strength and properly take and protect even a single root of virtue. As it is said in the Sutra of the Essence of the Earth, these ten paths of virtue lead to Buddhahood. If one does not protect even a single path of virtuous action for as long as one lives, but says, "I am a Mahayanist, I seek the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment," that person
