Or generate great joy, or through those causes generate small joy, and offer well. In short, the place should be cleaned well and decorated well, and many supports headed by the Buddha's image should be arranged. Visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions as if they were in front of you, remember their qualities, and generate strong faith. Request the lama to sit on the lion throne, and according to what is said in the ritual, generate the thought of the Buddha. Arrange beautiful and numerous flowers, incense, perfume, lamps, etc., to make them beautiful. With prostration and praise as the prelude, offer the mandala and offerings separately to the Three Jewels and the lama, and the lama should guide the disciple's mind well and make it focused. Urging to take the vows quickly: Then, in the posture of prostration, with the right knee on the ground, or squatting, if it is a householder, say "noble son," or if it is a monk, if young, say "long-lived one," if old, say "venerable one," and request to grant me the complete Bodhisattva vows. Request "grant quickly" three times, as said by glorious Dipamkara. The reason for saying the three terms "noble son" etc. is to show that it is not necessary for only renunciants and elderly self-learners to take vows, as said by Yon tan Od. The wise Jnanasri said: "The path of mantras etc. and giving etc., only a bhikshu can receive from a skilled bhikshu, not from others." This explains that if there is a bhikshu suitable for a bhikshu to receive the two higher vows, one should not receive them from householders etc., but it is not that the vows cannot arise if received from others. Cultivating great joy: Keep the mind focused on one point, generate only faith in the mind, and think that now I will soon obtain the great treasure of unsurpassed, inexhaustible, and immeasurable merit, repeatedly contemplate this meaning, and sit silently with palms joined. Asking about obstacles: For the receiver, the skilled bestower stands on the seat, without letting the mind wander, and says this: Noble son or Dharma friend, the name is...

Ask, "Are you a Bodhisattva? Have you made aspirations for Bodhicitta?" He answers, "Yes." The purpose of the two questions is to awaken the power of the lineage well and to strengthen the aspiration. After asking about obstacles, Master Atiśa cultivates joy, and then asks the disciple, "Do you wish to receive from me all the foundations of training of all Bodhisattvas and the precepts of the Bodhisattvas?" The disciple answers, "I wish to receive." Then the master intends to bestow the vows. The actual ritual is: having well understood the meaning of the ritual, one should say this: "Son of the lineage, so-and-so, whatever has been the basis of training and whatever has been the discipline of all past Bodhisattvas; whatever will be the basis of training and whatever will be the discipline of all future Bodhisattvas; and whatever is the basis of training and whatever is the discipline of all Bodhisattvas who are now appearing in the ten directions, and whatever basis of training and whatever discipline all past Bodhisattvas have trained in; and whatever all future Bodhisattvas will train in; and whatever all Bodhisattvas who are now appearing in the ten directions are now training in, all the bases of training of Bodhisattvas and all the disciplines of Bodhisattvas, that is, the discipline of moral conduct, the discipline of gathering virtuous qualities, and the discipline of working for the benefit of sentient beings, do you receive from me?" Ask this three times, after each answer, he also answers, "I will receive." Answer this three times. The basis of training is the places where one trains. Discipline is the nature of training in that. That is, commonly declaring the training of Bodhisattvas of the three times, explaining the method of training in that, and summarizing these into three disciplines, which are taken as the content to be promised and received. There are four parts to the entering ritual, the first is to request knowledge: in front of the image of the Thus-Gone One, the Buddhas of the ten directions.

And the Bodhisattvas abide, relying on the feet of all beings, with palms joined, the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, I, the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, from the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, have properly received the vows of the Bodhisattva's discipline, having received them three times. I, named so-and-so, this Bodhisattva named so-and-so, having properly received the vows of the Bodhisattva's discipline, I have become the empowered one, I beseech the noble ones of the ten directions, the boundless and limitless realms, and all beings whose minds are not obscured, to know this, and recite this three times. Furthermore, the disciple should remain seated, visualizing reliance on the Buddhas and their retinues of the ten directions, and actually prostrate three times to each direction, scattering flowers once, and finally standing, with palms joined, beginning with "I beseech all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions to consider me," and making supplications. The prostrations above and below are directed towards them, and the east and west directions are also the same. What is obscured is us, what is not obscured is the Buddhas and their retinues. Praising with benefits is: This is the Dharma nature, at the moment when the activity of taking vows is completed, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the boundless realms of the ten directions will think: The prince of the Bodhisattvas has properly received the vows of discipline. Such signs will appear, such as the shaking of the seat. Afterwards, they will think: Where, to whom, and in what way was it received? Once they think, the vision of wisdom will enter. Through the vision, the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, in a certain world, from the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, has properly received the vows of the Bodhisattva's discipline, and has received them well. Thus knowing, the Buddhas treat them like beloved children, and the Bodhisattvas treat them like siblings, may there be no obstacles, may all be accomplished, with good intention, may each be loved with compassion.
