It is thought to be because there is no difference between each. Master Abhaya, regarding the contradiction elimination of the different root downfalls of the Bodhisattva vow and the Akasagarbha Sutra, elaborately explained the classification of the downfalls with five, eight, and four kinds for medium, small, and large persons. Even for one person, there are other downfalls. Five were spoken to the royal family, which was spoken to people of medium capacity, eight were spoken to beginners, which was spoken to people of small capacity, and four were spoken to Bodhisattvas, which was done according to the power of great people, but it is also considered that other downfalls are also established for each of those people. In this way, each of the three types of people will have seventeen downfalls. The first of the Bodhisattva vow is said in the Akasagarbha Sutra, and including that, there are fourteen. The middle two of the remaining three of the Bodhisattva vow and the last showing similar Dharma, therefore there are seventeen root downfalls. If the four spoken in the Bodhisattva vow itself include the others, then there will be no other root downfalls that are not included in these four. In terms of the way of inclusion, what can be included is praising oneself, etc., eight kinds. What is to be included is abandoning the Mahayana and praising oneself and slandering others for the sake of fame and gain, because it is in what can be included, except for those that appear from the Akasagarbha Sutra, and abandoning the mind of enlightenment spoken from skillful means, there are fourteen root downfalls. How to include it? Abandoning the Pratimoksha vow and the Hearer Vehicle not abandoning desire, etc., and lying that one has obtained forbearance for the profound meaning, these three are included in praising oneself and slandering others. Because the Mahayana Bodhisattva is one's own, therefore praising that and slandering the Hinayana, and because lying is praising oneself and slandering others. Stealing the property and Dharma robes of the Three Jewels, and cutting off ascetics, including cutting off, etc., three kinds, and giving alms to those who enjoy the right dwelling are all included in stinginess not giving wealth. Because of strong stinginess and attachment, unable to bear others enjoying those things, therefore snatching them back and letting them give, and giving and receiving, and because it will become stinginess for some people. Creating discord in the Sangha and letting them abandon tranquility is because of stinginess not giving the Dharma.

Gathering together, due to the stinginess of attachment to the Dharma, being unable to tolerate the wealth of the Dharma and destroying it, and due to intense stinginess, not showing it oneself and not allowing others to show it either. Actions such as violating moral conduct, as well as the other four inexpiable sins and destroying a fetus, are all included in striking sentient beings. Abandoning the Dharma of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, as well as speaking of emptiness to those who have not trained their minds, and abandoning the mind of enlightenment, are all included in abandoning the Great Vehicle. Because the Great Vehicle also teaches the vehicles of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, abandoning the Great Vehicle also abandons these two, and because of not training the mind, one creates the cause of abandoning emptiness oneself, and because the mind of enlightenment itself is the Great Vehicle. Holding wrong views, establishing oneself and others in the ten non-virtuous actions, and preventing entry into perfect enlightenment and leading to the Lesser Vehicle, these all belong to teaching what appears to be the true Dharma; in relation to the Great Vehicle, the other two vehicles are what appear to be the true Dharma, so it is said. Some Tibetans say that this is in relation to the different disciples and the different intentions of the sutras, so one should follow the different rituals. If one takes vows according to the rituals spoken of in the Compendium of Trainings and the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds, then those spoken of in the Jewel Heap Sutra will become root downfalls, and if one takes vows according to the rituals spoken of in the Bodhisattva Grounds, then those spoken of in the Bodhisattva Grounds will become root downfalls. Some also think that this is caused by the different tenets of Madhyamaka and Cittamatra. On this, I do not think that the view of the New Commentary is reasonable, because it seems to contradict the view of the great chariot, Shantideva, who is the standard for explaining the meaning of the sutras. Like this, that teacher said, are those of royal lineage and beginners endowed with the bodhisattva vows or not? If they are, then it is unreasonable to determine separately that there are five for those of royal lineage and eight for beginners. If they do not have vows, then it is unreasonable for them to incur downfalls, and how could those faults become the faults of those who have vows? As an answer to this question, for those faults that are likely to occur, they are stated by their own names, because it is to create fear of that fault, so it is not that everything will become a downfall and be mutually abandoned, how could this not be contradictory? Because the transgression of nature is great, those who have not taken vows also have no share, and the root of virtue will be cut off, but for those who have vows, it is even more so.
