What is it? For those suffering from poverty in life, it is to give them the food and drink they desire. For those suffering from fatigue, it is to give them the vehicles and mounts they desire. For those suffering from shame, it is to give them the clothes and ornaments they desire, because without clothes and ornaments they will feel ashamed. For those suffering from a lack of utensils, it is to give them the vessels and utensils they desire. For those suffering from foul odors, it is to give them the incense, flower garlands, and perfumes they desire. For those suffering from a lack of shelter and light, it is to give them the shelter they desire, such as seats, and the light of lamps to encourage diligence. To benefit those who wish to rely on a dwelling, there are two aspects. With what intention does one gather a retinue? It is not for fame and gain, but rather, one should first have a compassionate heart and give a dwelling with a pure mind, free from ulterior motives. There are two ways to gather a retinue: gathering with material possessions and gathering with the Dharma. The first has two aspects: seeking from others, which is to seek clothing, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and utensils from faithful patrons in accordance with the Dharma for the sake of the gathered retinue. Sharing one's own possessions means sharing one's own clothing and other items obtained in accordance with the Dharma. There are two ways to gather with the Dharma, of which giving instructions is eightfold: In order to settle the mind that does not abide, there are five instructions for settling on an object of focus: for those with strong attachment, hatred, delusion, pride, and conceptual thought, give, in order, the contemplation of unattractiveness, loving-kindness, dependent origination, the analysis of the elements, and mindfulness of breathing. For those whose minds are settled, in order to attain their own benefit, as an antidote to the view of permanence and annihilation, give the instruction that shows the Middle Way, which is free from permanence and annihilation. To induce the abandonment of the pride of attainment, thinking that one has accomplished the path without actually doing so, and thinking that one has attained the fruit without actually attaining it, there are two instructions, which can be summarized as abandoning dwelling, transformation, and union. Giving subsequent instructions is fivefold: To prohibit what is accompanied by faults, saying that it is not permissible, and what is faulty

If there is nothing, say "it is okay." If it is used for permission and prohibition, encourage them to abandon the opposite practice. Even if they do so, do not let them go, but punish them. And be happy to use permission and prohibition without confusion. In order to accomplish the matter of conforming to the minds of others, there are two: Briefly speaking, when a Bodhisattva is doing the work of conforming to sentient beings, he must first understand the thoughts, nature, and faculties of sentient beings. For those sentient beings with whom he should live together, he should live with them in that way. For those sentient beings whom he should tame, he should tame them in that way. Among them, thought refers to the mind, that is, having thoughts of good or bad, hatred or love. Nature refers to inclination, that is, observing which vehicle they are inclined to, and conforming to that inclination. Faculties refer to latent tendencies, that is, conforming to those latent tendencies. Explaining in detail, there are two parts: observing benefit and harm, that is, with what kind of physical and verbal behavior to conform to sentient beings. If it seems that it will bring suffering and displeasure to that sentient being, then observe in this way: if that suffering and displeasure cannot make that sentient being return from non-virtue and abide in virtue, then the Bodhisattva should strive to abandon that behavior and conform to his mind. If that suffering and displeasure can make others abide in virtue, then one should only be close to compassion for others, and should not conform to the minds of others, but must do that behavior, because it is ultimately beneficial to him. Similarly, if that behavior does not bring suffering to the sentient being to be conformed to, but it seems that it will bring suffering to others, then the principle of whether to abandon or not abandon that behavior is the same as before. If it is not to accomplish the behavior of conforming to others, but one's own physical and verbal behavior seems to bring suffering to others, then one must also see whether it does not belong to one's own precepts, whether it does not possess the two accumulations, and whether it cannot make others return from non-virtue and abide in virtue. If it is, then one should abandon it in order to protect the minds of others. If it is the opposite of these three, then one should only be close to compassion and act, and should not conform to the minds of others. Similarly, if physical and verbal behavior seems to immediately bring happiness and pleasure to others, and is ultimately beneficial, then one should act. If it is ultimately harmful, then one should not conform to others, and so on.
