What need is there to say more? It means that when others cause small harm, (one's) mind is not disturbed. This means abiding in the four dharmas of practicing virtue. Vigilance is: having the previous boundary, the later boundary, and the middle boundary, as well as the five kinds of vigilance that are the things to be done beforehand and the things to be followed together. These are also, in order, correcting the faults of the past time according to the Dharma, earnestly thinking of doing so in the future time, and doing so without forgetting in the present time. If one acts and abides in such a way that no faults occur, then one acts and abides in that way, striving diligently, thinking that there is nothing that cannot be done, and relying on it to act and abide in that way. This is mainly being vigilant about the precepts arising from the Pratimoksha. Among these five, the fourth is the root. If it exists, the fifth will arise. If it does not exist in a hundred, even if faults occur, they can be remedied according to the Dharma in order. The ritual and pure livelihood combined into one, the pure ritual or conduct, is not boasting of good deeds out of desire for fame, not concealing evil deeds but proclaiming them, having little desire and contentment without being unhappy with obtaining a small amount of inferior things, and having contentment and little desire without particularly pursuing obtaining a large amount of excellent things. It is enduring the suffering of cold, hunger, and thirst, not being unhappy with not obtaining, having no suffering, subduing the senses, being gentle and not rough, not following the environment and being unsteady, having beautiful behavior and proper mindfulness, and having extremely peaceful behavior. Pure livelihood is being free from the five wrong livelihoods such as hypocrisy. Although one has already guarded, one has not guarded well due to six reasons, namely, thinking that this is enough, having impure speech with motivation, despising, not clinging to retinue, not correcting faults, and having impure ritual and livelihood. The first has two types: body and speech are guarded, but the mind is not guarded from the desires of the three times, and although one has guarded, one does not wish to practice samadhi by relying on the precepts. Not clinging to retinue is, Master Yönten Öd said, not clinging to the retinue of the precepts, tolerance. The cause of the perfection of the precepts that accumulate merit is: five

Regarding the two, the proximate causes of the first five perfections (generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, and meditation) are: In sequence, with respect to their opposing factors, not accepting even subtle miserliness towards body and possessions, as well as the afflictions that are the basis of moral corruption; not accepting all arising near-afflictions such as anger and resentment; not accepting all arising pervasive torment, anger, and resentment; not accepting laziness that prevents engaging in virtue; not accepting negligence arising from sleep, idle talk, frivolity, and disrespect; and not accepting tasting the flavor of meditative concentration, as well as the afflictions of that realm, or dejection and excitement, but abandoning them. In short, by sequentially cultivating antidotes to prevent the arising of these opposing factors, and never allowing them to control oneself. The proximate cause of wisdom is: knowing as they are the benefits of virtue, the causes of virtue, the results of virtue, and the five obstacles that hinder the accumulation of virtue, thereby abandoning the five kinds of ignorance and the obstacles. The benefits are gods, humans, and the three enlightenments. The causes are the causes of higher realms and definite goodness, such as the ten virtues, i.e., relying on a spiritual friend, listening to the Dharma, thinking, and meditating, etc. When obtaining the result of virtue, viewing it as permanent, pleasurable, pure, and self is a reversed view, therefore, the opposite of this is a non-reversed view, that is to say, a Bodhisattva will not view obtaining the result of virtue as reversed. Thus, knowing the qualities of the virtuous results of the six perfections and their causes, and by abandoning the opposing factors of the six perfections previously mentioned, accumulating the roots of virtue of the six perfections is accumulating all virtue, and will quickly accumulate, because all virtue, mundane and supramundane, is invariably included in these six perfections, and if the opposing factors of these six are abandoned, they can be easily accumulated. Here, proximate cause means the cause for easily accomplishing generosity, etc. The cause for the perfection of ethics that accomplishes the welfare of sentient beings is abiding in all ethics that accomplish the welfare of sentient beings in eleven ways, that is to say, each one abides in all ways. This is like helping others.
