Abandoning and not clinging to present things is not indispensable for the precepts of householders, but it is necessary for renunciants. Therefore, in general, one should contemplate the faults of samsara, and in particular, contemplate the faults of desire. If one does not change one's mind as before, one will not become someone who is good at guarding the precepts, and one must have certainty about this. To be happy to dwell in solitude means to be happy in the solitude of the body, and even when dwelling among many, to dwell far away from thoughts of desire and so on. Moreover, one does not think that just having precepts is enough, but relies on them to strive to newly generate the immeasurable samadhi of a Bodhisattva, and to gain mastery over the samadhi that has already arisen. This shows that if one is content with just having pure precepts and does not seek higher qualities, the precepts will not become perfect. Completely purifying speech and thoughts means that even when living in the midst of noise, one does not speak evil words or words of affliction, and when living in solitude, one does not generate even a little bit of evil thoughts such as desire, but guards them well. Even if one makes a mistake a hundred times due to forgetfulness, one will immediately regard it as a fault and generate strong regret. If one does this regularly, then relying on it, as soon as evil speech and evil thoughts arise, mindfulness will arise immediately, and one will also gain the mind of not doing, and thus abandon them. If one becomes accustomed to abandoning, then as much joy as one used to have for these two, one will later have that much dislike for all actions, and the two minds will shift positions. Striving not to arise from the beginning, and even if they do arise, not ignoring them, but regarding them as faults and generating strong regret, this shifting of the mind before and after, preventing what should not be done, is the supreme instruction for making the precepts completely pure. Not despising oneself means that when hearing about the three precepts of those who have entered the path being vast and extensive, the objects of learning being countless and inconceivable, not being the object of speculation and being inconceivable, and practicing for countless eons or entering for a long time without being short, and giving up the body and so on, which are difficult things that others cannot do, one feels fear and trepidation towards these, and thinks that I cannot do it, this is despising oneself, and one must prevent it. How to prevent it? Those are also people.

Because of the transformation, one gradually learns and becomes endowed with those trainings; it is not that one has the ability from the beginning. If I do not give up the effort to learn gradually, I will surely attain those, thus generating joy. Therefore, after hearing countless trainings, abandoning them thinking, "Who can learn such things?" or abandoning them thinking, "These are for other Bodhisattvas, not for me," this is a great obstacle to the growth of the potential of the lineage. Therefore, as mentioned before, preventing discouragement, one should engage with strong effort in what one can actually engage in. For those things that one cannot do for the time being, one should contemplate extensively, "When will I be able to learn such trainings?" And for that reason, one must strive to accumulate merit and purify obscurations, and one must make great aspirations. Certainty is: contemplating one's own faults, not contemplating the faults of others, and not generating suffering. Then, are the faults of others left as they are? No, one should generate compassion by focusing on the nature of afflictions. How does one generate it? This is not the fault of this person, but it arises involuntarily due to the power of afflictions. Thus, towards the unruly and those who break vows, one should not generate aversion and anger from all aspects, but rather generate more love, and not only that, but also generate the desire to help them. Like this, one should generate the desire to help them, thinking, "In any way, may they generate Bodhicitta, not be controlled by afflictions, be separated from afflictions, and attain unsurpassed Bodhi," thus generating the desire to be a spiritual friend. Patience is: even if others strike with hands, sticks, weapons, etc., one does not generate hatred in one's mind, let alone utter sinful words that cut off life or strike. Therefore, in order, the three—mind, speech, and body—are purified. Like this, if one can endure even great harm, then what need is there to mention patience when one does not do even a little of what is unhelpful, such as scolding others, verbally abusing them, getting angry, or saying "Shut up!" which violates vows, and such harm that turns into mental suffering? This is what is said in the commentary by Samudra Megha. In the scriptures, it says: What need is there to mention small harms that turn into suffering due to scolding, anger, or the eight prohibitions? If one does not generate even hatred in response to being struck, then what about those?
