The vows of the Bodhisattva who goes forth, etc., are indicated by the word 'initiation' of Vajrasattva. Moreover, one should not think, 'Whether it is accomplished or not, let it be,' but should strive diligently to uphold them. Also, in the 'Mandala Ritual Vajra Garland,' it says: 'For offenses such as slandering the guru, one should make offerings to the best of one's ability and confess before the guru, and then take the vows as before.' The Black One said that one should perform a feast offering with the guru and Vajra brothers, first confessing the offenses committed. Now, one might wonder whether the ritual of proclaiming and taking the vows should be done separately by the guru, or whether it should be combined with a ritual or initiation. The meaning of 'take the vows as before' is that just as the vows were taken in conjunction with the mandala ritual when taking the vows for the first time, so it should be done in the same way now. Although this text only mentions 'taking the vows,' initiation is definitely necessary. As it says in the third chapter of the Kalachakra: 'In order to purify any fundamental downfall that has occurred, one should enter this mandala again.' Also, in the seventeenth chapter of the Black Enemy, it says: 'If, due to carelessness, one harms the guru's samaya, then one should draw a mandala and confess the offense to the Sugatas.' Separating the guru and the samaya, the samaya refers to the teachings of the Sugatas, etc., and the Black One explains that harming the samaya is committing a downfall. Shantipa says, 'If one has despised the guru...' etc., meaning that if one has committed a fundamental downfall, one should enter the mandala again and receive initiation. As it is said: 'To purify a fundamental downfall, having entered the mandala, if one receives permission, the downfall will become smaller and be purified.' In the commentary on the twenty-seventh chapter of 'The Arising of Vows,' it also says: 'For any of these downfalls, one should purify them by giving initiation again.' Jñanabodhi also said the same. Now, one might wonder whether initiation is not necessary when taking the vows in the mandala ritual, since one has already obtained the vows and is restored. Initiation purifies sins, and taking the vows, both together, purify the root downfall.

It is not enough to just receive the vows, empowerment is also necessary. Therefore, except for the first root downfall, the methods to rise from those that do not depend on empowerment, as explained in the 'Extensive Commentary on Root Downfalls,' 'Lakshakara,' and 'Nectar Moon,' etc., are not appropriate in any way. Therefore, it is said that the commentary 'Nectar Moon' was written by Shantipa, but it seems that his name is being borrowed. The root downfall commentary explains that empowerment is necessary. So, for this restoration, is it necessary to receive empowerment from a lama, or is it okay to do self-entry? If there is no lama who possesses the qualities, or even if there is, but the path is very long and difficult to travel, and there are obstacles, then self-entry is also okay. In the 'Mandala Ritual Vajra Garland,' it says: If you yourself have broken your vows, how can this kind of empowerment be regarded as the ritual for the teacher to enter? It should be understood in this way. However, if the noble lama is very far away, and the path is difficult to travel, etc., if you are in a place where you cannot travel due to obstacles, then you can do it, otherwise it is not so. It is said that this and what was previously quoted from 'The Ornament of Kosala' are wonderful, because elsewhere, even those who hold vows are very difficult to find. Restoring and regaining the vows is also thought to arise through empowerment and self-entry. If you do so, but there is no thought from the bottom of your heart not to be defiled by downfalls, and there is no determination to guard the vows, then it is not so, as clearly explained with examples, as Darikapapa said: This is for those who promise not to do it again later, but not for those who do not have the intention to guard the vows later. For example, if someone is poisoned, some doctors, in order to counteract the poison, make him take the downfall of medicine, and then eat poison as before, this is the same as that situation. It is said. Therefore, if you regret the previous actions and generate a strong determination not to do it again and take the vows, then you can recover, so know this. Although this is the case, there is a great difference between becoming a vow holder after a root downfall has occurred and being restored according to the correct method, and a vow holder who has not been touched by a root downfall from the beginning. For example, for a Bodhisattva vow holder, if a root downfall occurs, even if the vows are taken again, the vows will arise, but in that lifetime it is impossible to obtain the first ground of pure intention, as stated in the 'Bodhisattva Ground.'
