A Mahayana practitioner should regard all sentient beings as their only child and should never abandon them at any time. A Mahayana practitioner who is separated from the field of sentient beings is like a firefly being given the name of possessing sunlight, merely a name. This is what the Black One said. Loving-kindness is the wish to accomplish the supreme benefit and happiness for sentient beings, so it should never be abandoned. This is what Shantipa said. The two have the same meaning, so the opposite of that is abandoning loving-kindness. If one abandons loving-kindness by thinking that one is unable to accomplish benefit and happiness for sentient beings, etc., then it becomes no different from abandoning bodhicitta. Therefore, if one asks what is the way to abandon it, is it to become angry with that sentient being, or not to generate loving-kindness specifically for them, or to wish that they do not encounter happiness, etc.? The Red Tantra says: "The mind of loving-kindness for all sentient beings, should never be abandoned." Also, the Vajra Heart Ornament says: "Without loving-kindness, one abandons sentient beings." Therefore, (abandoning loving-kindness) refers to generating the thought of wishing (sentient beings) not to encounter happiness. Whether or not to abandon loving-kindness is based on whether or not to abandon the mind of loving-kindness, which has been explained in those tantras, so the commentary Amrita Moon and Lakshakara, etc., explain it as clearly having the power to relieve the suffering of suffering sentient beings, but letting it disappear, etc., seems meaningless. As this treatise says, this is the root downfall of abandoning loving-kindness, and it is also stated in the same way in the aforementioned sources. Therefore, if one focuses on any sentient being and generates the thought of wishing "this (sentient being) is separated from all happiness," and thus abandons loving-kindness, this is the fourth root downfall spoken by the Buddhas. These are spoken by the Black One as they appear under the criticism of tenets, and Shantipa also speaks of them in the same order. Explaining the fifth root downfall: "The root of Dharma is bodhicitta, abandoning it is the fifth.". Here it is divided into two, of which the object is: Bodhicitta is the vow to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of sentient beings. As the Flower Ornament Sutra says: "Good son, the mind of bodhicitta is like the seed of all the Buddhadharmas." As it is said, the qualities of the Buddha

It is the root of all Dharmas. Shantideva said that compassion, which wishes others to be free from suffering and its causes, is the mind of enlightenment, which is one aspect of vowing to attain Buddhahood in order to liberate beings from suffering, and also represents the other aspect, so it should be regarded as the view of the Black Practitioner. Regarding the difference between this and loving-kindness, the Black Practitioner said that loving-kindness is preliminary, and the mind of enlightenment is the actual content of what has gone before. So, what actions cause a downfall? If one thinks that one cannot achieve enlightenment for the sake of limitless sentient beings, and thus abandons that aspiration bodhicitta, that is the fifth root downfall. The Black Practitioner said that that mind, after initially vowing, in order not to degenerate, means not to destroy, so the meaning of abandoning is like that. Regarding this, some commentaries on the root downfalls also say that abandoning is like Kunda, which will be discussed in the Kalachakra chapter. The naming of the downfalls is also the same as the previously indicated sources, except for Guhya. This, merely by abandoning, becomes a root downfall, and even if other limbs are not complete, it is a defeat. Next, the sixth root downfall is explained: "One's own or another's tenets, reviling the Dharma is the sixth." Regarding this, in the two, the object is: the Black Practitioner considers oneself to be a Buddha, others to be non-Buddhists, and the Dharma to be the path of higher rebirth. If one reviles non-Buddhists, it is quoted as saying: "The cause of being far from the All-Knowing One." However, if one wants to point out the faults of non-Buddhists and reviles them, although there will be faults, here the root downfall points out the object, so it is not appropriate. Therefore, the root downfall scriptures and commentaries say: "One's own tenets are mantra, and another's tenets are the Paramita Vehicle," it should be explained as such. The word "or" indicates that any one of the objects of revilement is sufficient. The commentaries of ManNye and DomJoung, as well as the sadhana of "The Treasure of All Teachings" and the "Adornment of the Compendium," also use the name of reviling the Three Vehicles, and their intention is the same as this. The Red and Black Tantras and these two have the same meaning. The "Vajra Heart Ornament" clearly says: "Reviling one's own and others' tenets." Guhya says: "Destroying others' Dharma." Therefore, this seems to show only a part. So, what actions
