Please bless me. Those who possess great compassion and liberate all sentient beings, please protect me. In order to accomplish all actions, please grant me the great samaya. Thus, it should be recited three times. This is what is said when taking vows at the time of entering the mandala. In the commentary on the Māyājāla, Kunjing also says: 'Hold the Buddha's bodhi in mind.' This indicates that it is generating bodhicitta, and therefore self-dedication has already been done, so it should be understood that it is not stated separately. Because it is said, 'Whoever generates bodhicitta has already completely given everything away.' Also, in the Guhyasamāja Tantra, it is said: 'On that night, to the best of one's ability, thus have him take the vows.' After saying this, 'First, take refuge in the Three Jewels, then the guru causes the unarisen bodhicitta to arise, and also increases that which has already arisen.' Thus it is said, and in the commentary that places these latter four verses in the four hundred and fiftieth verse, Śāntipa says to take them with the common vow-taking ritual, and also in the Mañjuśrīmūlatantra it is said: 'If one possesses three dharmas, then the conduct of mantra will be completely perfected, what are the three? Namely, not abandoning all sentient beings, guarding the vows of a bodhisattva, and not abandoning one's own mantra.' Thus it is said, therefore the vows of the supreme vehicle of the Kriya and Carya tantras appear to be only the taking of the entering vow, so it should be understood without doubt that this is taking the vows of a bodhisattva, not the vows of the five families. Then, in the commentary on the Compendium, the Ratnamālā, said to be composed by Śāntipa, the taking of the vows of the five families is done at the disciple's initiation, with the disciple taking the vows, and then separately explaining the ritual for the guru to take the vows, which contradicts the treatises of the great ones, so do not trust it. Now, the initiation of the Carya tantra is not often seen, but the initiation of the Kriya tantra seems to be transmitted a lot, but at that time, few people pay attention to how to take the vows and which root downfalls to protect, so it is difficult to say whether or not one has received the vows.

I, having seen that those who have attained have not grasped the boundary of whether or not they have lost [their vows], if there happen to be even one or two virtuous individuals who cherish the vows of the supreme vehicle, I will speak having thought for their sake. In short, if one does not keep any vows, one should only enter the mandala, and not give even the water empowerment and above. If one takes the bodhisattva vows and keeps them, but takes the vows of the five families and does not keep them, one may give the water empowerment, etc. But one should not give even the vajra master empowerment, etc. As it says in the fifteenth chapter of the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "First is the water empowerment; second is the crown empowerment; third is the vajra empowerment; fourth is one's own master; fifth is the name empowerment; sixth is the complete Buddha; the vase empowerment is seventh; eighth is the secret empowerment; ninth is the wisdom empowerment; by that very vajra union, all are given the vajra conduct; one's own teacher shows the prophecy; these are the order of the empowerment rituals." As it is quoted in the Mandala Ritual Vajra Garland, the order of empowerments is definitely stated. The distinctions of giving or not giving empowerment depending on whether or not one has taken vows have been explained. Second, there are three parts to determining the transgressions that contradict the vows one has taken: identifying the basis in whose continuum the transgression arises; classifying the transgressions prescribed for that basis; and explaining the meaning of each classification. First, it is necessary to have two characteristics: having received the unique vows of secret mantra and not having abandoned them, and the mind naturally abiding. For if one does not have vows, then even if one generates naturally negative misdeeds, one will not generate transgressions that contradict the precepts. And if one's mind does not abide properly due to madness, etc., one will not generate transgressions, as it is said in the Bodhisattvabhumi in the section on bodhisattva vows, and it is the same here. Second, as it says in the Vajra Garland: "The transgressions of one who possesses the vows of Vajrasattva are of two kinds: root transgressions and gross transgressions." It is good to make two kinds or two categories, because in the root commentary of the Kalachakra, the Source of Vows, and the Vajra Peak, only these two names are mentioned. Third,

There are two Māpas: Explaining the transgressions of other unsurpassed ones and explaining the transgressions arising from Kālacakra. The first has two: Explaining the root transgressions and the gross transgressions. The first has two: the meaning of the name and the meaning of the text. The first is: It is said to be the root transgression of the Vajrayāna. The Vajrayāna is from the fifteenth chapter of the Guhyasamāja, where it says, "The Vajrayāna is unsurpassed." In the commentary on this, Śānti says, "The so-called Vajrayāna is the collection of all the Mahāyāna, which are the six pāramitās. The collection of these is skillful means and wisdom, and the collection of these is of one taste, which is bodhicitta. That is also the samādhi of Vajrasattva, and that itself is the vajra. The vajra is also that, and the vehicle is also that, so it is the Vajrayāna, which means the mantra vehicle." As it is said, the yoga of Vajrasattva, which combines skillful means and wisdom without separation, is the vajra, and the vehicle is also that. In this regard, this is the vehicle of the cause by which one goes, and here there are two vehicles of the result by which one goes. The obscuration of actions that contradicts the precepts established by that vehicle for those who hold the mantra vows of going leads to lower states and obstructs the arising of higher qualities, so it is a transgression. To this, adding the distinction of "root" means that whichever transgression is adhered to, it severs the vows, which is the ultimate of transgressions. If it is protected, it is accomplishment, and if it is not protected, it should not be called the root of suffering. Because in the Manifest Enlightenment of Vairocana and the Sutra of the Essence of Space, it is also translated as the root of transgression, so the root must be done to what is to be abandoned, and because protection has become the root of accomplishment, transgression does not need to become the root. Furthermore, in the extensive explanation of the root transgression, it says, "Or, if the root of skillful means and wisdom deteriorates, seeing the undesirable result is a transgression." This is not the meaning, because there is no reason for the root of skillful means and wisdom and the root of the root transgression to become one. Second, the meaning of the text has three: the activity of entering the explanation, closely establishing the explanation itself, and the activity of completing the explanation. The first has two: praising and vowing to compose. The first is: With all reverence, to the lotus feet of the guru.
