Wishing to attain omniscience through magical power, one should skillfully employ means such as displaying various crafts like singing, dancing, music, and illusion, and gather beings entirely through the four means of gathering with those methods and ways. This is for the sake of desiring the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, one should completely abandon killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and wrong views. A Bodhisattva householder should uphold these five foundations of training, learn the trainings as they are taught, and emulate the past Tathagatas with faith. This answers the latter question, abiding in the unconditioned aggregate of morality, praised by the Tathagatas, practicing conditioned morality completely with skillful means and wisdom, and one should not abandon the four root downfalls even for the sake of life. What are the four? Abandoning the sacred Dharma, abandoning the mind of enlightenment, being stingy, and harming sentient beings. Why is that? Because these lack skillful means and wisdom, and are inherently afflicted, and cannot be restored. This shows the answer to the first question. Here, the training of the ordained is not mentioned, but the training of the householder is explained because the root downfalls that sever the Bodhisattva vows of both of these bases are the same, so it can be understood by speaking to the householder, and there is no need to explain the root downfalls of individual liberation here, and the latter question specifically asks about the householder, so it needs to be answered. The last two root downfalls here are explained in the Bodhisattva Grounds, the first comes from the Sutra of the Essence of the Jewel, and the second comes from the Sutra of Skillful Means, so they are the root downfalls of the Bodhisattva vows. I have explained these in detail in the commentary on the Chapter on Morality, so refer to it. Regarding the questions about breaking the ten virtuous precepts and completely severing the ten virtuous precepts, the former is receiving the five precepts from others, and the latter is the case of a Bodhisattva householder who has not received the five precepts from others, but has vowed to protect them himself, as explained in the commentary. If it is the former, then the Bodhisattva vows are destroyed by the four root downfalls.

Even if the precepts of the ten virtues are lost, there are still the precepts of individual liberation. If it is the latter, then neither of the two precepts are present, so it is said to be severed from the root, understand it this way. Therefore, it is incorrect that some treatises say that it will not be severed from the root. Abandoning the true Dharma means slandering and having wrong views towards the Dharma and those who speak about the Dharma. Not listening to the Dharma, not thinking, not meditating, not asking, not reciting, not making offerings, etc., not doing any one of these every day. Abandoning the mind of Bodhicitta means abandoning the aspiration and practice of Bodhicitta, abandoning the practice of emptiness. Stinginess means having possessiveness towards Dharma and wealth, and not giving to others who should be given. Harming sentient beings means causing temporary and long-term harm to sentient beings through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. The explanation in the commentary is in general terms. The way to become a root downfall should be understood elsewhere. Irrecoverable means that the precepts that have been abandoned cannot be taken again, not referring to the first three and the harm caused by anger, but referring to the nature of afflictions that rely on conditions and give many permissions. The way to uphold these precepts, in the Manifest Enlightenment of the All-Knowing, when asked what is the precept that is without obscuration in the three times, and abiding in which the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will be pleased? The answer is, it is giving one's own body to the victorious ones and their sons, giving the body, one also gives the three doors of body, speech, and mind, therefore Bodhisattvas should restrain their own three doors. The meaning of what was said is, when offering oneself to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, one has no autonomy, but belongs to them, and their way of acting is not to fall into evil deeds, therefore one has upheld the precepts. The precept without obscuration, the commentary explains, is the precept of abandoning the ten non-virtuous deeds. Other treatises say that this is the discipline of the precepts, from which it can be inferred that one takes the three precepts including the precepts of restraining discipline, gathering virtuous Dharmas, and benefiting sentient beings. To clearly explain the ritual of upholding the precepts through offering oneself, in the Three Vows it says: Regarding taking the Samaya and precepts, I pray that all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will consider me. I, so-and-so, offer myself to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I pray that all will take care of me at all times. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
