The Vajra Acharya must be well-versed in the ten suchnesses of the first group of ten. One who is skilled in the work of drawing mandalas is skilled in activities such as drawing with lines and drawing with colors. These are from the Magical Net: Stable and gentle, possessing intelligence, patient, upright, and without deceit, knowing the union of the secret mantra tantras, one should perform the work of drawing mandalas. Completely knowing the ten suchnesses, bestowing fearlessness on all sentient beings, always rejoicing in the Great Vehicle, that is said to be the Acharya. This is a summary of what was said. Regarding the phrase "knowing the union of mantras," it is better in the corrected version to say "the Acharya who is skilled in explaining mantras," which means being skilled in explaining the path of mantras to others. Utterly delighted means always rejoicing in the Great Vehicle, as it is said, which means having a firm delight of utmost reverence for the Great Vehicle in general and especially for the Mantra Vehicle. Subduing the senses means guarding the doors of the senses with mindfulness, cutting off distraction to wrong objects. To summarize the meaning of these, it is to have great compassion, to have unwavering faith in the Great Vehicle, to be well-versed in the common and uncommon treatises, to be extremely skilled in the order of guiding disciples, to subdue the senses by guarding against the misdeeds of the three doors, that is, one who possesses the five qualities should be taken as a lama by a wise disciple. Also from the eighth chapter of the Vajra Tent: The Vajra Acharya himself is qualified. The mantra taught by him will surely be accomplished by the practitioner. Possessing stable and profound Dharma, skilled in all fields of knowledge, knowing fire offerings, mandalas, and mantras, having reached the other shore of perfect consecration tormas, fully understanding the ten suchnesses, maintaining the conduct of the Hearers, respecting the order of the Mantra Vehicle, rejoicing upon seeing beautiful forms, skilled in drawing mandalas and possessing recitation, completely destroying the root downfalls, through the excellent union of mantras and tantras, giving happiness to all the worlds. Having made such a lama real, no one should slander him. It is said extensively that, in particular, the Vajra Acharya must not possess root downfalls, and what is said in this and in the Vinaya Origin is indispensable, therefore the aforementioned

It is essential to prioritize guarding against the three misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. Practicing the conduct of a Shravaka is similar to what is stated in the commentary on the characteristics of a master in the Vajra Garland of Explanatory Tantras, which says, "Externally practicing individual liberation and internally delighting in the meaning of the union." Therefore, one should possess the vows of individual liberation. Among them, a fully ordained monk (bhikshu) who is a Vajra Holder is supreme, a novice monk (shramanera) who is a Vajra Holder is middling, and a householder who holds the vows of mantra but does not have the vows of ordination is the lowest of the Vajra Holder masters. As it is quoted in the commentary on the empowerment chapter of the glorious Kalachakra: "Knowing all ten of those, among the three, a bhikshu is supreme, a novice is called as such, and a householder is the lowest." It is said. This refers to a fully ordained monk with mantra vows who properly studies the well-spoken teachings of the Vinaya, who is said to be the supreme basis for the path of mantra practice. Therefore, if one assumes that any individual liberation belongs to the Lesser Vehicle and considers it highly incompatible with secret mantra, it should be understood that one has not grasped the overall framework of the Buddha's teachings. If one cannot find all the qualities mentioned as characteristics, what should one do? As it is said in the glorious Essential Retreat: "Due to the power of the degenerate age, the lama's faults and virtues are mixed. In all aspects, there is no one without faults. Whichever has more virtues, one should examine well and the disciples should rely on that." As it is said, if one cannot find someone who fully possesses the characteristics, one should rely on someone with more virtues. Since the Vajra Master is the root of accomplishments, many characteristics are mentioned in various tantras. One should know the qualities of the characteristics, and those who wish to rely on a disciple should strive to possess those qualities, and those who wish to rely on a lama should also strive to find such a person. If one cannot find such a person, one should diligently accumulate merit and make aspirations as a cause for being taken care of by someone with such characteristics in the future. Therefore, it is extremely important to know those characteristics of a lama. What kind of disciple should one rely on? As it is said in the first chapter of the Gradual Divisions of the Net of Illusion: "One who delights in virtue and meditation, who always respects the lama, who constantly makes offerings to the deities,
